PlayStation 5 Firmware Update To Add Missing Launch Feature

With the PlayStation 5 now available worldwide, Sony’s focus has turned to making new consoles to meet the demand while also providing features that were missing at launch. As such, a new firmware update for the PS5 is on the way, and one of the features being added when this next update arrives is Variable Refresh Rate.

While the PlayStation 5 reviewed well despite not having features like VRR, it will still be a welcome addition when it arrives. Essentially allowing for cleaner frames without tearing, VRR works with certain televisions and can have a massive impact on how games look. As such, many gamers were disappointed by the lack of VRR options for the launch day version of the PS5, as anyone with a VRR compatible TV was not able to make use of the feature.

Like PS5’s lack of virtual surround sound via speakers, there is still a way to get access to VRR. While the speakers require the use of a 3D Audio headset to accomplish the feeling of action going on around the player, VRR currently functions on the PS5 through HDMI. However, those looking to use VRR via compatible TVs have been out of luck thus far, as the TV compatibility is completely nonexistent on the PS5. With this upcoming update, though, that is set to change.

While Sony warned that the update will only work with certain PlayStation games, that wording should not be too worrisome given past statements from Sony. Like the early warning regarding backward compatibility on the PS5 console, this is likely just the company covering its tracks as most games should work fine. That said, it is still unclear when this firmware update bringing the VRR support will arrive, though its addition should be expected soon given how the news broke.

Sony directly updated its massive PlayStation 5 FAQ with the VRR update news, beginning the “Does PS5 support VRR” section by highlighting the current support for HDR via HDMI. Sony goes on to share that “PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR” after a future software update, bringing an end to the brief FAQ section. This should mean that the feature is not far off, and it will be interesting to see if this next software update includes any more requested PS5 features when it arrives.

While small features like folders and larger additions like PS5 storage expansions still need to come as well, VRR support is a welcome addition. Hopefully, this is just the start, as Sony can certainly continue these major firmware updates for some time to come.

The PlayStation 5 is available now.
