Video game mega-sensation Minecraft recently announced a tie-in with Star Wars because somehow the omnipresent space opera hadn’t already been brought over to the proc-gen voxel-based geometric survival-crafter that pioneered a whole genre of games. The crossover will include new textures for everything, a map featuring 12 planets to be explored with the help of hyperspace travel, and a skin pack featuring characters from series.
Now that players are able to dig around looking for diamonds as some of their favorite characters, it begs the question: What other intellectual properties from film and television would lend themselves well to the literally infinite world of Minecraft with visually interesting character skins or even world maps for players to explore?
The James Bond series has been producing new movies, TV spinoffs and video game adaptations for decades, with novels which originally served as the series’ inspiration still being written and released to this day. Over the years, the series has featured a cast of characters who either wittingly or unwittingly get caught up in the spy’s adventures, as well as a revolving door of actors who have portrayed the spy themselves. A world map featuring some of the series more fantastical locations, like the Moonraker base and the volcano lair as featured in You Only Live Twice, would allow for a lot of fun for players to explore or otherwise devise dastardly plans for world domination in.
Each of these versions of 007 had their own way of portraying the character, and in a DLC pack would each be deserving of their own player skin (yes, even including George Lazenby). There would also have to be character skins for the Bond girls that accompany him in every film, as would the workers at MI6 that provide the spy assistance, like Moneypenny, head of the Missions department M as portrayed by their various actors and actresses, as well as the the quartermaster Q as portrayed by several actors throughout the series. The many visually distinct villains that Bond battles throughout the series would have to be included in the packs as well, like Jaws, Goldfinger, Xenia, and Blofeld.
What better way to honor the film’s anti-capitalist themes and message than to do a tie-in with Minecraft in the form of a DLC character skin pack people can spend their hard-earned money on? This comedic film with elements of the extraordinary has a cast of characters who all have very strong visual motifs, allowing for the characters to be instantly recognizable for those who have watched the film (which is available for streaming on Hulu).
Pretty much all of the characters in the movie could be included. Lakeith Stanfield’s character Cassius Green, before and after his trademark bloody head bandage as seen in the promotional material, would perhaps be the most immediately recognizable. Detroit as played by Tessa Thompson would also bring a lot of flair to the game, though it remains to be seen how they would incorporate her character’s signature and ever-changing earrings into it. Salvador as played by Jermaine Fowler, and Cassius’s uncle Sergio, played by Terry Crews, both who have very particular manners of dress that are consistent throughout the film, would also have to be in this hypothetical DLC. Played by Omari Hardwick, the very conspicuous-looking, eyepatch and bowler hat-wearing Mr. ______ (his name is always bleeped out in the film) would no doubt be one of the more popular characters to play as since he’s just so interesting looking. Armie Hammer as Steve Lift, WorryFree CEO would also be a skin that should be included if players want to play somebody in a nice suit or two. Employees and bosses of the telemarketing agency RegalView, as well as the literal wage-slaves for WorryFree would make for interesting player character avatars. Finally, and this is a spoiler so anybody who hasn’t seen the movie yet should just skip to the next entry from here, there should be an equisapien skin or two (in the film they are differentiated by having different tattoos), since it’s not Sorry to Bother You related without mentioning the fact that was a thing that happened in the movie.
The Warriors, a movie from the 70s depicting a dystopian New York City full of gangs, is full of characters in zany costumes as the titular gang try to make their way through hostile streets back to their turf on Coney Island. The Brooklyn neighborhood, or at least the boardwalk area would be fun to explore as a world map. Rockstar Toronto made a fantastic brawler game based on the movie for the PS2 and Xbox, which has also been slightly upscaled for a PS4 release (with some of the film’s excellent soundtrack removed because of licensing issues).
The Warriors themselves would obviously be the feature character skins for this hypothetical DLC pack. A couple of cop skins would have to be in there, since they’re a source of antagonism for the gang in the film. Some of the rival gangs with flashy outfits featured in the movie, named and shown but not very relevant to the plot, would be fun to see, such as the Van Cortland Rangers, the Jones Street Boys, the Saracens, and the Moonrunners. Gangs featured prominently in the film would also have to be included, such as the Orphans, the Turnbull ACs, the Lizzies, the Rogues, the Baseball Furies, and, of course, the Riffs. With a pack like this, players could really get into a PVP mindset and have a lot of fun protecting their own user-created turfs and talking in all sorts of fun slang.
If players want to get really meta and redundant at the same time, a skin pack based on Saw would give them the opportunity to ask others on a server if they want to play a game, all while everybody is already playing a game. With the upcoming continuation of the series Spiral set to be released in 2021, the film series is being once again brought back to relevance, even if for a short time. While Minecraft would probably not be willing to do a tie-in with the gross-out franchise, here’s a look at what such a DLC pack might look like.
Jigsaw’s surrogate, Billy the Puppet, is the obvious choice of skin here as the puppet became an icon for the films and was recognizable by even those who hadn’t indulged in the ultraviolent franchise. The main characters who find themselves in Jigsaw’s twisted games in the first film, Dr. Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight, would be obvious choices for players to choose as their avatars, since they are perhaps some of the more memorable survivors since the series begins to focus on larger groups of people in the sequels. Throughout the series, multiple characters were revealed to be aiding Jigsaw in making his cruel and unnecessary games of torture and death through several convoluted plot twists. These characters would have their own skins in the pack as well. When kidnapping their victims, Jigsaw and his co-conspirators would also wear a disturbing pig mask with long black hair while frequently also dressed up in a red and black robe. Adding this as a skin to cap this list would make the pack really feel complete. In the upcoming Spiral, the lead characters that are portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock, are logical additions to the DLC as well.
Since redstone, a powder that can be mined in the game which allows players to essentially engineer working structures and devices, is a thing in Minecraft, this means that a Saw DLC pack could also include a world map that puts the players in some of Jigsaw’s nightmare scenarios. While it’s questionable how a reverse bear trap could be implemented in the game (perhaps a helmet that will kill the player in a set amount of time), there are plenty of trap rooms in the series that can be at the very least recreated recognizably enough, or perhaps even some Minecraft-specific ones. For instance, a room where a group of pistons attached to pistons ad nauseum that will crush the player if they don’t escape a room fast enough.
With the Mad Max considered relevant again with the jaw-droppingly good Mad Max: Fury Road, players may be itching for the opportunity to play as the titular Mad Max. On top of that, with a texture pack, new worlds procedurally generated in Minecraft could allow players infinite barren Australian post-civilization deserts to explore, perhaps allowing for an even more intense survival experience than the game generally offers players as they scrounge ruins and stretches of wasteland for water, oil, and food.
With a cast of colorful characters who lead their own outposts and vehicle-riding gangs, a hypothetical Mad Max DLC pack would allow for a wide variety of zany character skins. Obviously, Max himself would have to be in there, with several potential variations, like the classic Road Warrior outfit, Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the character with the face mask when he was converted into a living blood bag, and with an untamed mullet as seen in Beyond Thunderdome. Imperator Furiosa, who quickly ascended into the hall of fame of characters after Fury Road, would be a necessity for such a pack too. Since Fury Road is so fresh in everyone’s mind, Immortan Joe, his wives, his minions (gotta have guitar-flamethrower guy The Doof Warrior along with Rictus Erecturus) and the surprisingly endearing Nux would have to be in the pack. Characters from the older films would have to be featured as well, like Lord Humungus and various members of his Maurauders, Master Blaster, Bearclaw Mohawk, Toecutter and his various named gang members, and Blackfinger are just a few that come to mind. There’s a variety of new characters that were introduced for the Mad Max video game, released in 2015, that would also make good additions to the roster to add value.
A skin pack of the vampire characters from What We Do in the Shadows would allow players to live out their fantasies of being a character from the uproarious mockumentary series and film. Included in the pack would have to be the main characters from the original film – Jemaine Clement’s Vladislav, Taika Waititi’s Viago, and Jonathan Brugh’s Deacon, as well as Nosferatu-esque Petyr. Deacon’s familiar Jackie, as well as significant vampires who attend the Unholy Masquerade would also add some flavor to this hypothetical DLC. Perhaps the decrepit manor the characters live in during the film would make for a fun world map for players to explore or do vampiric hijinks in.
The skin pack would also have to include the cast from the fantastic new FX TV show. Kayvan Novak’s Nandor the Relentless’ flowing locks and elegant cape would no doubt make a great addition, as would Laszlo Cravensworth, though it’s a shame there’s no way to imbue players with Matt Berry’s stunning vocal talent. Natasia Demetriou’s empathetic and caring Nadja would make for a fun player avatar, as would her eternal lover and victim of repeated beheading Jeff/Gregor. The understated yet hilarious Mark Proksch’s character Colin Robinson, the energy vampire who they live with and who handles the paperwork that lets them keep their out-of-place New York City mansion, is also a must-have, though he would look much less vampiric than the other bloodsuckers in the pack. Nandor’s familiar and fan-favorite character Guillermo, played to perfection by Harvey Guillén, is an absolutely necessary inclusion as well. For added value, Wesley Snipes, Tilda Swinton, and Danny Trejo, who in the series are canonically vampires, could be added, along with Jackie Daytona, Laszlo’s volleyball coaching alter-ego when he goes on the run for an episode of Season 2.
File this one under “Also Never Gonna Happen”, but a Breaking Bad DLC pack for Minecraft would allow for a good bit of fun. One could imagine one player in a Walter White avatar telling another playing in a Jesse Pinkman avatar that they “have to cook” right before throwing some fish in a food smoker. See? It’s fun already.
Player skins in this pack would need to have several variations of Walter and Jesse since they have a few iconic outfits in the series, such as in their yellow hazard suits, but it would also need to include other obvious choices. Walter’s family and raison d’être before the whole meth thing, Skyler and Walter Jr./Flynn, would need to be in there. Skyler’s sister Marie, her husband Hank, and Hank’s partner Steven Gomez are also sensible inclusions. Those in Jesse’s life like Jane Margolis, Skinny Pete, Badger, and Combo feel like they would be missed if they didn’t make it in the pack, along with others who assisted Heisenberg in his descent into evil like Saul Goodman and his employees, Huell and Patrick. Rival drug lords Tuco Salamanca and Gustavo Fring (before and after the final events of Season 4) are necessary inclusions, as well as Todd, because everybody hates that amiable sociopath. If there’s room, Gale Boetticher can appear in the pack as well since he plays a small but pivotal role in the series. Finally, Mike Ehrmantraut absolutely needs to be in the pack since became a fan-favorite character in the show and there can be no half-measures when it comes to DLC packs. Oh, and who can forget the inclusion of the capabilities to brew blue meth at the brewing stand?
Players can make neither tossed salads nor scrambled eggs in Minecraft, but a DLC skin pack based on Frasier, would allow them to recreate favorite scenes from the long-running sitcom, create whole new scenes of their own, or just have fun bickering with each other as Frasier and Niles Crane while somebody in a player avatar of Martin Crane gives quips on the side. Daphne Moon and Roz Doyle are also necessities for such a skin pack. Making a tamable animal that visually matches Eddie the dog is also a must. Side characters Bulldog Briscoe and Kenny Daly should be included, as well as the only other character aside from the main cast and the dog to appear in over 100 episodes, a character given only the name “Waiter”.
It’s easy to imagine that a lot of people would have a lot of fun playing as the debaucherous gang, as well as the cast of side characters who seem to journey further and further beyond the pale in parallel with, and usually as a result of the gang’s repugnant schemes and foibles.
Obviously the main gang, Charlie, Sweet Dee, Dennis, Mac, and Frank should be included. The gang’s family members, like Charlie’s mother, both of Mac’s parents, Uncle Jack, and Gail the Snail absolutely should be in there too. The never-named love interest of Charlie’s the Waitress and Rickety Cricket are must-haves, as should Mac’s briefly on-again-off-again girlfriend Carmen and Frank’s occasional fling Artemis. The McPoyle family, featuring versions of Liam before and after his freaky eyepatch, feel necessary. Bill and Maureen Ponderosa (before and after cat transformation), Hwang, Z, the Attorney, and Old Black Man (that’s what he’s called in the show) would round out the DLC pack.
The absurdist-beyond-absurd late night-styled Eric Andre Show would have plenty of potential Minecraft player skins that plenty of fans would enjoy the opportunity to play as. Eric Andre himself, of course, would be in the pack, with several variations featuring his ever-changing hairstyle throughout the seasons, and in his outfit from Season 1, which is different from his trademark suit from the rest of the show. Hannibal Buress would have several variations too, both as himself in several of his outfits throughout the show, and as classic characters like Hannibal Buress Safety Stegosaurus and Morpheus Hannibal Buress. Eric Andre in his green-screen suit for the “Bird Up” segment, complete with parrot on shoulder, and Hannibal in a similar outfit with a snail shell on his back from “Snail Down would be a joy to behold.
Other player skins from the show would be the members of the house band, including all 3 variations of it, as the members were consistent Seasons 1-3 before they were replaced by a new group in Season 4 and once agani swapped out for a new band in Season 5. Finally, reoccurring “celebrity guests” (who are actually random people or impersonators who have varying degrees of similarity to the celebrity they are portraying), like Semere Etmet as “Russell Brand” and “Jay-Z and Beyonce”, played by Huynh Quang and Beverly Swanson. For good measure, a player skin that’s just Eric Andre naked with a censor bar over his privates should be included, because otherwise it wouldn’t feel like a real Eric Andre Show DLC pack.
Players would get ample opportunity to practice saying “Dammit Bobby!” with a King of the Hill DLC pack. A world map featuring at least parts of Arlen, Texas recreated, featuring Rainy Street as well as different locations shown throughout the series would also be a lot of fun to see and walk around in.
Characters would obviously include the entire Hill household, Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Luanne, and including the grandfather Cotton Hill. Hank’s friends, Bill, Dale, and Boomhauer are also must-haves in a DLC pack. Dale’s wife and son, Nancy and Joseph, as well as Joseph’s biological father, John Redcorn III are necessary inclusions, as are the Hill’s neighbors, Kahn, Minh, and Connie. Lucky Kleinschmidt also feels like a necessary inclusion in the pack considering his importance in the series. Players can already cook beef in Minecraft, so if that smoker block was reskinned as a grill, with an added beer can “potion”, players could live out the true King of the Hill experience if that was something they were aching for.
Plenty of cartoons have gotten the Minecraft treatment, like The Simpsons and Adventure Time. The Scooby Doo gang feels like it deserves their day in the perfectly square sun. Such a pack could include a world map of a haunted amusement park and mansion if the developers were feeling frisky.
Obviously the frequent occupants of the Mystery Machine, Fred, Wilma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby would all have their own skins (Scooby is big enough and stands upright plenty, thus making the dog viable as a player skin). Red Herring could also get a playable avatar, as well as the various “monsters” that the gang believed Red Herring to be dressed up as. This includes Mastermind, the Black Knight, the Ghost of Redbeard, Ghost Diver, Green Ghost, and Wolfman. Just to really complete the whole shebang, Don Knotts and the Harlem Globetrotters should be in there as well.
Bob’s Burgers has been running for 11 seasons now, with it having been renewed all the way up to a 13th as well as having a movie in the works. So, it stands to reason that a DLC pack tying in with the hugely popular show would make a lot of sense, perhaps in coordination with the movie’s release. A world map featuring the shore city the characters live in, along with a boat ride that would take players across the water to Kingshead Island, would be enjoyable places for players to romp around in.
The Belcher family, Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, and Louise are obvious choices for playable avatars, as well as their extended family. Teddy, the friendly contractor who sometimes can’t take a hint and Mort, the aptly named Mortician next door are also clear choices for characters in the pack. Other inclusions would be Phillip Frond, the overly-involved school counselor, both Jimmy Pesto Jr. and Sr., who serve as Tina’s love interest and Bob’s business rival, respectively. Mr. Calvin Fischoeder, the eyepatch-wearing eccentric businessman and landlord to the Belcher family would make for a fun player skin. The children’s teachers and classmates who make frequent reappearances throughout the series would also be good additions to the DLC pack. Other characters of note to be included would be Hugo and Ron, the Health Inspectors, Gretchen, dentist Dr. Yap, Chet the mannequin, Randy the documentarian, Mike Wobbles the mailman, Mickey the bank robber that Bob hired temporarily and who drives a pedi-cab, Marshmallow, and the guy who’s always in a purple speedo and roller skates.
Lupin the Third just got a 3D-animated movie at the end of last year with a North American release planned for the latter months of 2020, bringing a revived interest to the venerated series about the gentleman thief. The Lupin series has a whole cast of visually distinct characters, both with its main characters and the villains and archenemies established through his various heists and assorted escapades.
The DLC pack would have to include the main characters with several variations of the characters outfits seen throughout the series, Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, and Zenigata. Characters from individual adventures would also help add value to the pack, like Rebecca Rossellini, Count d’Cagliostro, Clarisse d’Cagliostro, Becky, Rosetta, and characters from the new film like Laetitia, Lambert, and Gerard. A map pack for the DLC could include the castle of Cagliostro, with secrets abound for players to discover the castle’s treasure as the plucky thief and crew, and players could double-cross each other constantly along the way.
