Earlier in November, a listing appeared on UK retailer Game suggesting that a collection of Pokemon titles called the Pokemon Master Collection was real, and was scheduled to release for the Nintendo Switch in 2021 – adding to a number of other rumors about Pokemon games. However, there has also been evidence proving to the collection listing being fake.
According to the listing itself, the Pokemon games included in the collection are Pokemon Red, Pokemon Gold, and Pokemon Ruby. As some Internet users have pointed out, the included games are very specific. For instance, the decision to include Pokemon Ruby and not Sapphire, or perhaps even the enhanced third version, Emerald, is odd. If anything, including a Pokemon game that combines two games into one, or simply both versions by themselves would make more sense.
Another piece of evidence that may suggest that the collection is fake comes Joe Merrick, webmaster of Pokemon news and information site Serebii.net. According to Merrick, he checked the Google cache for evidence tied to the Pokemon Master Collection‘s page and wasn’t able to find anything of value. Furthermore, Merrick said the collection rumor started after a Twitter account said “people hosting on Mario All Stars would be grumpy with Pokemon.” However, it was later confirmed that the Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC retail bundle was being discussed.
Finally, taking a look at the Pokemon Master Collection‘s description, one can see that it is full of mistakes. For example, Pallet Town and Team Magma are not capitalized, while the word “experience” is spelled as “experince.” Even the word “Pokemon” which is constantly used throughout the listing, becomes lower-cased at one point.
Although it may be natural to have a few mistakes crop up in a listing, the abundance of errors takes away from its credibility given how big an operation Game Freak runs. Simply put, it goes to show how easy it is to make up listings, like with the recent alleged Red Dead Redemption: The Outlaws.
All in all, with the evidence piling up, it may be difficult to advocate for the Pokemon Master Collection‘s existence. That doesn’t mean a collection will not exist, as there have been other rumors about another Pokemon collection being worked on. Additionally, with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade right around the corner, it was revealed that The Pokemon Company will have an announcement at the parade. For all fans may know, the announcement may end up being a Pokemon game collection, or something similar.
