Unsurprisingly for a game with both Vikings and assassins, there’s a lot of death in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Eivor’s journeys in Scandinavia and Britain often bring them into conflict with other leaders, and sometimes a decision must be made between mercy and vengeance. One such decision happens in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s third region, East Anglia.
After arriving in East Anglia, Eivor embarks on a quest to install Oswald on the local throne. As an Anglo-Saxon, Oswald is supposed to be a client-king of the Danes, following his marriage to Viking Valdis. However, before his wedding he is intercepted by Viking chieftain Rued, a raider who has been plaguing the people of East Anglia, both Saxon and Dane, for some time. It’s Eivor’s job to muster a joint-force of Anglo-Saxons and Danes to attack Burgh Castle, and take revenge on Rued. Although Valdis initially believes that Oswald is dead, during the assault it’s revealed that he was only taken prisoner. Once Eivor has defeated Rued and has him at their mercy, they are given a choice of whether to leave him alive, or kill him.
When facing the decision of whether to kill Rued or not, Valhalla‘s protagonist Eivor takes counsel from both Oswald and another, spoiler-heavy, character. While Oswald says that Rued must stand trial in his new kingdom, the other character insists that Eivor take Rued’s life in accordance with the Old Laws of the Danes. If Eivor does so, the decision has several different consequences.
Firstly, Oswald will be upset with the choice, and less enthusiastic in thanking Eivor for his rescue. However, this will have no effect on Eivor’s alliance with East Anglia. Next, Finnr, Eivor’s Viking friend who helped them gather the mixed force of Saxons and Danes, will decide to permanently join the Raven Clan crew. Finally, players will miss out on a scene, and potential boss battle, in the following story quest.
If Eivor chooses to listen to Oswald, the new king will have Rued arrested, ready to stand trial after the wedding. However, this isn’t the last that players will see of the raiding Viking chieftain, so spoilers for the next quest follow. During Oswald’s wedding to Valdis, Rued escapes from captivity and arrives at the ceremony to challenge Oswald to single combat. Once again, the choice of how events play out will fall to Eivor.
If players choose to fight as Oswald’s champion, then a brief boss battle will ensue, during which Rued will be slain. While Oswald is still unhappy with Rued’s death, he will not blame Eivor for it on this route. In addition, Finnr will still decide to join the Raven Clan crew after the duel. Alternatively, if players allow Oswald to fight his own battle, then the young king will overcome Rued and banish him from East Anglia. After this display of mercy, Finnr will be inspired to stay at Oswald’s side, and remain in East Anglia.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
