While FIFA 21 is already available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch (though that last one isn’t very popular), a lot of players’ eyes are on the upcoming next-gen versions for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
So, with those versions of FIFA 21 set to release next week, EA has provided a comprehensive list of all the features and technical upgrades fans can expect from them (as a reminder, cross-play isn’t one of them).
For starters, the DualSense features will obviously be exclusive to the PS5 version, providing haptic feedback to recreate the feeling of blocking a goal and the impact of shots. The Ps5’s Activities feature will also allow players to jump into their favorite modes straight from the home screen, saving time that would have been spent on traipsing through menus.
Both versions promise to provide overall more realistic experiences, from the visuals and the lighting to the animations and even the sounds, which will apparently be more authentic than ever, with crowd chants having been captured from some of the world’s biggest competitions, like the Premier League.
One thing every players will care about is the improved loading times. According to EA, players will be able to from the menu to kick-off in only two seconds. Cross-progression will also allows PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners to transfer their FUT Club and VOLTA FOOTBALL content and progress between their respective next-gen counterparts. Unfortunately, not everything can be carried over, like progress made in the online modes and Career mode.
The full list of details can be found on EA’s website, but it remains to be seen whether these upgrades will be enough to please certain portions of the player-base. Though the game received overall solid reviews from critics, its user score on Metacritic is undeniably abysmal, with many criticizing it for being too similar to last year’s entry and for its use of microtransactions.
With many considering FIFA 21‘s microtransactions as just another form of gambling, EA appears to have acknowledged it by incorporating a feature that tracks how much time and in-game money a player spends and lets players place caps to stop themselves from going overboard.
EA’s use of microtransactions has even led to it being potentially fined by the Dutch government, as loot boxes are officially considered gambling in the Netherlands. Though it can avoid the fine if it removes them from FIFA 21, EA has instead opted to challenge the fine.
FIFA 21 is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It will release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on December 4th.
