Microsoft Reveals Reason For Xbox Series X Manufacturing Delay

When the next-generation of consoles released two weeks ago, many people were shocked to hear there weren’t enough Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles to go around. Microsoft’s vice president of gaming, Phil Spencer, talked about why there was an initial delay in making more next-gen Xbox consoles for this holiday season during a recent interview.

Spencer revealed to The Verge that the reason for the Xbox Series X‘s manufacturing delay is that Microsoft was waiting for AMD technologies to be incorporated into the console’s chip. This was also affected by Microsoft’s business strategy of creating two new consoles to grow its customer base. The hardware delay put Microsoft a little behind Sony in building new units, but Spencer said it is currently back up to speed at full capacity.

The current problem is Microsoft meeting rising demands for the new Xbox. According to Spencer, the company will likely be in this situation well into the spring. However, he’s confident that Microsoft will be able to make up for it, and the company is looking to create more Xbox Series X units to keep up with demand. In the interview published today, Spencer doesn’t specify what the new AMD technology will do for the Xbox console, but he did also discuss how launching the Xbox Series S had an effect on manufacturing.

According to Spencer, the idea was to launch the Xbox Series S as a way to make next-gen Xbox gaming more accessible. It was part of a strategy to get even more people roped into the hype of next-gen releases. Though he mentioned there was some internal deliberation on how the company could achieve this, with the biggest arguments against doing so being the market’s complexity and how its rival Sony may be using a different strategy.

The counterargument was that Microsoft wanted to grow the company’s target audience, and figured Sony would invest more in the PS5’s technology. So, it was decided to release the Xbox Series S with the Series X, and only later did the executives find out Sony was thinking the same thing by releasing two versions of the PS5. Currently, both the Xbox Series X and Series S are hard to come by, but Spencer said more Xbox units are on the way and will be hitting retailer shelves soon.

According to Spencer, Microsoft manufactured more units for the Xbox Series X than the Series S to meet the demands for the console, and will moderate supply chains next summer. Gamers should expect to see more Xbox Series X consoles when 2021 comes along.
