The Mortal Kombat franchise has been through ups and downs during its nearly 30 year history. Some MK titles are revered to this day, while others are best forgotten. The franchise has created iconic characters that are staples of pop culture, and endures to this day by leaning into the campy elements that have come to define it. Early on in its life, Mortal Kombat received the Hollywood treatment, and the now cult classic film is making waves again thanks to a few tweets from MK creator Ed Boon.
Mortal Kombat 11 has been well received since it launched last year, staying relevant thanks to an ever-increasing roster of characters added in through DLC packs. While some characters added to the mix are obvious choices, like Mileena, it is likely that few MK fans thought they would see John Rambo perform a brutality in a fighting game. That unexpected content is keeping fans engaged, and Ed Boon’s latest tweets certainly fall into the “unexpected” category.
It started with Boon tweeting out an image featuring three skins for Mortal Kombat 11 in the likeness of the actors who played classic characters in the original movie. Christopher Lambert’s Raiden, Linden Ashby’s Johnny Cage, and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras’ Sonya Blade are shown with Boon’s caption “MK Movie skins!” This tweet was followed shortly by a trailer promoting the “Klassic MK Movie” skin pack, acting as a full reveal for the new content. With Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate now out, it seems Netherrealm Studios has been hard at work to keep players coming back for more.
The short trailer shows off some quick fights featuring the new skins, and the characters’ outfits look exactly like what they wore in the Mortal Kombat flick. These character skins are pretty unique in that they also feature voice work done by the actors from the movie. While fans may have been clamoring for Mileena content, surprises like this are a treat, especially when this content is available now for purchase. The bundle is up and going for $5.99.
It is clear that fans still have a soft spot for the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, and knowing this, Boon and his team are giving fans what they want, or perhaps what they didn’t even know they wanted until today. The skins look great, and are sure to provide a dose of nostalgia to long-time fans of the franchise.
Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
