The PlayStation Portable may be over 15 years old, but gamers have not forgotten their time with the mobile Sony platform. Viewed as a console ahead of its time, the love for the handheld has clearly not wavered, as the PSP is currently trending on Twitter.
This is not the first time the PSP has hit the trending page, as it did so back in July of this year. While it is surely a product of the time, with the platform making use of cheat code books, lacking media apps, and running slow, users gathered earlier this year to talk about all the things it did right. From the PlayStation Store to a Music and Video Player, as well as access to internet radio and emulators, gamers were quick to praise the PlayStation Portable.
Though it has been several months since the PSP was trending on Twitter, the handheld has begun trending once again, with the reasoning behind the discussion being largely the same. While many gamers were quick to praise the PSP’s strong game lineup, as well as highlight the portable console’s features, the conversation seems to have been sparked by a single tweet from a user named @scruched. The gamer posted saying “kids these days don’t know nothing about these,” showing off the PSP alongside a Gameboy Advance SP and Nintendo DS.
This quickly sparked nostalgia-filled discussions about the PSP, with gamers like @heykelechi bringing up how the system was “a cultural reset” and a “classic.” However, one user named @aaronproduced was quick to point out users “giving the PS-Vita some disrespect.” Pointing out the Vita’s strong features, like the touch screens, cameras, and backwards compatibility, the twitter user makes some solid points about the PlayStation Vita and why it is also deserving of appreciation.
While the PSP’s successor had strong features and a solid set of games, the original PlayStation Portable remains the more popular of the two. While this is likely due to the low adoption rate of the Vita, as its hefty launch price and pricey memory cards hurt sales heavily, it is impressive to see that the PSP is still discussed so heavily well over a decade since it launched. Still, gamers looking to load up their PSP to pay respects may want to be careful, as PSP batteries have been swelling and leaking.
Seeing gamers celebrating the PSP on social media is quite the sight, but it is nice to see the console being appreciated. With the on-console PS5 game Astro’s Playroom paying homage to the PSP as well, the system is getting a fair bit of love from all angles.
