Elden Ring: What We Hope to See at The Game Awards 2020

The holiday season is always a great time for gaming, as lots of companies decide to schedule major releases around this time of year. After all, it’s a time of gift giving, so lots of people will be looking forward to giving or getting long-awaited new games as gifts for the holidays. This year’s major festivities center on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, but there’s still time in the year left for blockbuster announcements. The Game Awards 2020 are getting closer by the day, and that’s always an occasion for teasers, trailers, and surprises. One game that really ought to get some time at the Game Awards is FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.

For a long time now, FromSoftware fans haven’t seen hide nor hair of Elden RingThe game is such a big deal that fans can’t be blamed for being agonized by the silence. A team-up between Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mind behind the Dark Souls franchise, and A Song of Ice And Fire‘s George R. R. Martin is almost certain to result in a fantasy epic experience that will make a mark on the genre. Now that it’s been a full year since Elden Ring was announced, there’s got to be something worth revealing about it, and it’s rumored that’ll happen at The Game Awards this year. Here’s a few things FromSoftware could reveal to help Elden Ring make waves.

The most basic and perhaps most important thing that FromSoftware could come to The Game Awards 2020 with is a release date for Elden Ring. By the time the annual awards ceremony rolls around, about a year and a half will have gone by since Elden Ring was announced, and there still isn’t any information on when it’ll come out. Compare that to Bloodborne, which released within a year of its announcement, or even Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which at least had more announcements come out a year after its reveal. With these games as reference points, it seems that FromSoftware is moving at a relaxed pace on Elden Ring.

The best thing that could accompany a release date is a gameplay trailer. The cryptic cinematic trailer from E3 2019 drew a lot of eyes, and now fans are waiting to see how they’ll explore this fresh IP’s setting. It stands to reason that fans expect something Soulslike of this game, considering Miyazaki is behind it. Even so, FromSoftware has already said that Elden Ring will be significantly different from Dark Souls in plenty of ways. And an action-packed trailer revealing some more snippets of Elden Ring‘s lore, setting, and characters would go a long way to building a second wave of hype for the game.

Beyond those basics, there’s a few flashier ways that Elden Ring could drum up attention. It would be great if Miyazaki, Martin, or both showed up as guests to talk a little bit about the game. As far as fantasy goes, it’s such a powerhouse combo that FromSoftware fans are probably eager to get a little insight on how the collaboration is going, or because Martin’s part is reportedly done, has gone. Probably the biggest reveal that FromSoftware could make is a playable demo for Elden Ring. That probably isn’t something that fans should hold their breath for; however, the game has been in development long enough that a demo could be put together by now, and a demo could make Elden Ring a star of the show.

Whether all or only one of these things come true, there ought to be something about Elden Ring at The Game Awards. FromSoftware’s next step is always a big deal, considering how many landmark games it’s produced. Long gaps between comments on a game in developmen aren’t always a bad thing, even if they make fans anxious. As the saying goes, no news is good news. FromSoftware, Miyazaki, and Martin are diligent creators, and odds are they’re taking their time to make an upcoming presentation just right.

Elden Ring is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
