Metro Exodus is officially coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The first in the series to be fully ported to next-gen consoles, Metro Exodus will also come with a slew of new enhancements.
Originally launching in February 2019, Metro Exodus marks developer 4A Games’ third entry in the novel-adapted franchise, as the Metro games are based on a series of books written by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Detailed in a post on its website, 4A Games’ development team talks about what to expect from its next-gen versions. Metro Exodus players will see major improvements such as a better frame rate, increased resolution, reduced loading times, and ray tracing. 4A hasn’t mentioned the specifics yet, so it’s unclear exactly how much of s boost players will see. The Ukraine-based developer – which was recently acquired by THQ Nordic’s parent company – also confirmed that those who own the PS4 and Xbox One version can upgrade to this next-gen edition for free.
Beyond the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development, Metro Exodus has also released on Amazon’s new game streaming service, Luna. In addition, the studio’s post announces the development of dedicated Linux and Mac versions of the game. 4A promises to share more information on these new versions as they get closer to release. In terms of release dates, however, the launch of all the new versions of Metro Exodus will not be until 2021.
The future of the Metro series is looking bright. Its recent acquisition is enabling its studio to work on multiple games in the post-apocalyptic series simultaneously. This includes a sequel to the core games, a Metro VR title, and – believe it or not – a multiplayer game. This new info comes as part of the Metro series’ 10th anniversary, where 4A Games not only talks about its Exodus plans, but also confirms that a multiplayer Metro game is in development. It should be really interesting to see a multiplayer experience brought to a traditionally story-driven, single-player series.
There are, however, plenty of fans of the older games who weren’t fans of Metro Exodus‘ semi-open world approach. A lot of gamers have felt the game is a bit lacking in the “horror” feel versus previous entries. Luckily, fans of both the source material and the first game will be pleased to know that a Metro 2033 movie adaptation is in development. The film is just over a year away from its planned release date, January 2022.
Metro Exodus is available now on PC, PS4, Luna, Stadia, and Xbox One. Linux, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
