There are a few things that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is synonymous with. One is being perhaps the greatest Western RPG released in the last decade. The other is its plethora of creative, off the wall, character and feature adding mods.
As huge and full of fun as Skyrim is, it’s starting to show its age. Skyrim looked pretty good when it first game out, but its graphics and features are no longer the definite shining example in games today. That said, many want to carry the seemingly endless Skyrim experience to next-gen consoles, and one mod is helping. Said mod unlocks the ability to run Skyrim at 60FPS on Xbox Series X.
Ordinarily, Skyrim can only be played at 30FPS due to a cap built into the game. The mod, through a little reworking and Vsync disabling, removes that cap, allowing for higher framerates. The mod’s creator, Smudgey5000, has stated the game can go up to 60FPS this way, although the framerate will not be constant. This isn’t surprising, considering how much stuff can fit into Skyrim that might slow the framerate down. Still, anyone celebrating Skyrim‘s 9 year anniversary will likely not care too much when the game has the potential to run twice as fast as normal.
The one major problem with the mod is that it turns off achievements, which many players won’t like. There is a workaround however, which involves downloading and enabling the mod, restarting, turning off the mod, then restarting again. Since the FPS cap has already been switched off, it should stay switched off this way while achievements are made available once more. This is hardly the first 60FPS mod for Skyrim, but it is a handy one for a next-gen console. Many players simply don’t know playing like this is a thing in Skyrim, but it’s only one of many things available through mods.
It’s not the only example of more content through mods either. Skyrim is an amazing game on its own, but some of the best features come from modded content. The mods are still coming to this day, with one of the recent adding Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice‘s combat system.
All of this only scratches the surface of course. Even more ambitious projects are being undertaken using Skyrim as a base. One of these is a fan remake of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion using Skyrim‘s engine. Only time will tell for sure, but there’s a real chance Skyrim continues to be very relevant even into the next console generation.
The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
