Over the past couple of weeks or so, rumors have been building hype for the release of a ‘Pokemon Master Collection’ that would bring many classic Pokemon games to the Nintendo Switch. It’s easy to see why many gave into the hype as such a collection would be a dream come true for many fans, but there was only one problem with this Pokemon rumor: like oh-so-many rumors in the gaming industry, it’s clearly fake.
The Pokemon Master Collection rumor has been thoroughly debunked and picked apart by eagle-eyed fans of the franchise. There are several strange listings, like oddly specific games that exclude their counterparts; a few stylistic failings such as a lack of capitals in Team Magma, Pallet Town, and Pokemon; and, according to Serebii’s own Joe Merrick, the Google Cache gives no evidence of this actually existing. However, just because this rumor is utterly false, that doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t hope for something similar on the horizon.
It’s somewhat disappointing to know this collection is fake; after all, there’s been a few diehard desires among the fanbase for many years. A massive open-world every-region game has been one, unlikely as that is, and a way to play all the games in one place is another. The Pokemon games have spanned practically every Nintendo handheld, but arguably, the Switch is the apex of Nintendo hardware. Having games for every region directly playable on it, perhaps even with a few improvements here and there, would go a long way.
A Pokemon Collection for Switch is a novel idea. There’s no proof it exists, but if fans continue to be vocal about it, Game Freak and the Big N may eventually give in. And just because this particular rumor is false doesn’t mean fans should give up on, perhaps, the biggest hint that such a collection may some day exist.
2021 is a special anniversary for Pokemon, being that it will be the franchise’s 25th year. These anniversaries are often dubbed the “Silver” anniversary, and with the second games being Pokemon Gold and Silver, it’s a good time to let a lot shine. While expectations should remain tempered, it’s worth highlighting that Mario recently celebrated its 35th with a ton of announcements including the Super Mario 3D World port, the brand new Mario BR game, the Mario AR toy, and the creme de la creme, Super Mario 3D All-Stars that itself includes a few of the mustached plumber’s games.
Naturally, this spawned its own rumors. Fans are hoping that Pokemon gets a similar treatment, with many rumors suggesting and hinting at everything from Pokemon Let’s Go versions of Gold and Silver to collections of classic games for the Switch. In there is also the desire for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Remakes, as well as a potential third DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield. Some rumors have even been oddly specific (a sign that they are typically false) that the first few generations are receiving remasters (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh), while the others will come in a ported collection.
Fans shouldn’t necessarily invest in these rumors any more so than they have the Pokemon Master Collection rumor, but Game Freak and the Big N have surely taken notice that fans are hoping for and wanting the same treatment for Pokemon as Mario got for his anniversary. If it’s remotely similar, fans can reasonably expect some grand things for this anniversary…and hope some form of collection is among Pokemon‘s 25th anniversary announcements.
