The card game UNO might be one of the longest running party games that is still played today, with a digital version even making the game playable online during the a year essentially without parties. However, the official brand has recently made a ruling on the legitimacy of a popular house rule that has even made its way into the Ubisoft UNO video game.
House rules in board and card games have become the topic of a number of online discussions, as everything from Monopoly to Chinese Checkers have gained unofficial rules overtime that players still never let go of. The UNO Twitter account has made rulings on some of the house rules players have developed within its game in the past as well, including that players do not have to draw until they can play when they don’t have a legal move.
This most recent house rule that UNO has taken it upon itself to correct is whether or not players need to shout out “UNO Out” when a player drops their final card in a round. In response to a tweet by Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz NBA team, the official ruling is that players do not need to shout the phrase, and a round ends when the card has been played. With this response from the brand itself, it’s uncontested that the “UNO Out” rule isn’t one that players need to acknowledge in the popular board game, although it is still a house to house situation.
The rule itself seems as though it’s disputed among fans as well, possibly due to some comparing the rule to the one that requires players to shout “UNO” when down to their last card. In fact, among the almost 57,000 votes on Mitchell’s original tweet, players actually chose that the “UNO Out” rule was the correct way to play the game. Fortunately, house rules, as the name implies, are rules that players can impose as they see fit, something that even Ubisoft’s digital versions of games like Monopoly still include to extend playtimes.
Having a rule that requires players to shout “UNO Out” for the last card does seem unnecessary, especially considering that the second to last card rule is still the way players remember it. Then with UNO available in braille, these types of rules only pull back from the game’s more recent trending towards accessibility. Of course, these are house rules, and players are free to play the popular party game however they wish to among friends, even if the callout isn’t an official requirement.
Uno is available now at most retailers.
