Xbox Head Voices Disapproval of Console Wars and Fan Negativity

Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has thrown in his two cents on the ongoing console wars that fans of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have been involved in over the past couple of decades on the internet.

In an interview with The Verge about the launch of the Xbox Series X, Spencer commented on the outright hate and dismissive feelings fans have for consoles that rival a favorite, even exclaiming that console wars are the one thing that would drive him out of the industry.

Console wars are an unfortunate side effect of the marketing that developers, publishers, and console makers use to compete for the attention of video game fans around the world. Both social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit house fans that will argue endlessly to defend or denounce both the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X with many fans resorting to hateful rhetoric.

While a toxic fan base can make someone’s experience tough to deal with, both Sony and Microsoft have also contributed to the culture in the past with jabs at each other through both last- and current-gen consoles. Earlier in the year, Microsoft threw some shade at some mishaps Sony had with initial pre-orders of the PlayStation 5, with the company touting its own plans. And despite the jab and Microsoft’s planning, many fans also had difficulties pre-ordering the Xbox Series X. While the small jokes are intended to be playful, they sometimes serve as fuel to the console war fire.

However, both companies have also lead the charge with positive examples as well. Leading up to the launch of both consoles, Sony and Microsoft congratulated each other on the other’s successful launch. Both companies routinely tweet at each other, like when Sony shared a Mortal Kombat 11 friendship video in a fun exchange with Microsoft, well-wishing players across both consoles.

Microsoft followed suit for the PlayStation 5 release by congratulating Sony on the launch of the console. While some may view these exchanges as strictly PR moves, the effort is an example of how even competitive companies can still compete while being respectful and kind.

Both new consoles have had tremendous success and have sold out quickly at retailers across the globe. While competition is sure to be fierce with exclusive games, features, and platform offerings being touted by both Sony and Microsoft, the sure winner of this generation are the fans who benefit.

The Xbox Series X is available now.
