10 Strongest Pokémon In Red & Blue (Based On Stats) | Game Rant

In 1996, Pokemon Red and Blue was released on Nintendo’s Game Boy and a phenomenon was born. The popularity of “pocket monsters” skyrocketed and continued to climb, until Pokemon eventually became the largest media franchise on Earth.

There is a lot to love about the games, but the main driver of their popularity is the Pokemon themselves. While Game Freak has had its ups and downs over the eight generations with different aspects of the games, the Pokemon themselves have always been a hit. Fans love these creatures for many different reasons, but they normally concentrate on collecting the strongest available to train. Let’s take a look at the ten strongest Pokémon in Red and Blue based on stats.

*Updated by Kirkland Fortner on March 24, 2021: As fans continue to celebrate Pokemon’s 25th anniversary, players are returning to the classic. The Pokemon Red and Blue games have always been fan favorites and continue to grow in popularity. Recently, there was even a new fan remake created in Unity.

With all of this going on, we thought it best to update this list to include the locations to find and catch these wonderful creatures. Additionally, we’ve added any special circumstances for catching and spawning that you need to know.

10 Tentacruel and Starmie

Tentacruel is a Water/Poison-type Pokemon and Starmie is a Water/Psychic-type Pokemon. They each have 435 as their base stat totals. Tentacruel is a great Pokemon despite how common it is, being incredibly fast combined with high HP and Special stats, it is not a Pokemon to take for granted. Starmie has a lot of the same qualities as Tentacruel, but it has the advantage of being a powerful Psychic-type, which was far and away Generation 1’s best type.

Tentacool can be found in basically any body of water when using the Super Rod. You can then evolve Tentacool into Tentacruel starting at level 30. Many Wild Staryu are located in the Seafoam Islands, although you will need a Water Stone to evolve one.

9 Rhydon and Aerodactyl

Rhydon is a Ground/Rock-type Pokemon and Aerodactyl is a Rock/Flying-type fossil Pokemon. They each have 440 as their base stat total. Rhydon is a physical beast in every sense of the word, while it is slow, it is also blessed with insanely high HP, Defense, and Physical attack, making it a force to be reckoned with. Aerodactyl has the rare quality of being a fast Rock-type Pokemon, which combines wonderfully with its great Attack stat.

Rhyhorn, which evolves into Rhydon starting at level 42, can be found in the Center and Second areas of the Safari Zone. Aerodactyl needs to be revived from the Old Amber found at the Pewter Museum of Science, which then needs to be taken to Cinnabar Lab.

8 Tauros and Lapras

Tauros is a pure Normal-type Pokemon and Lapras is a Water/Ice-type Pokemon. They each have a base stat total of 450. However, that’s where the similarities end because while they are both incredibly strong, they have completely different abilities.

Tauros is extremely fast and hits incredibly hard on the physical side, while Lapras is much slower and more defensive, having a very large amount of HP. Lapras also acts as a good mixed attacker, with both of its attacking stats being even.

Tauros can be found in any area of the Safari Zone that isn’t the Central one. Lapras, however, can only be obtained as a gift from a person on the seventh floor of Sliph Co.

7 Arcanine and Exeggutor

Arcanine is a pure Fire-type Pokemon and Exeggutor is a Grass/Psychic-type Pokemon. Both are fan favorites from Gen 1, and they each have a base stat total of 455. Arcanine is an all-around amazing Pokemon. It has more than an acceptable amount of points in all of its stats, giving it no real weak spots. While Exeggutor is somewhat slow, it more than makes up for that with its other excellent stats. Additionally, Exeggutor’s Psychic typing gives it a major advantage.

Wild Growlithe, which evolve into Arcanine, are found at Route 7, 8, or the Pokemon Mansion, and is exclusive to the Red version. Exeggcute can be found in any area of the Safari Zone.

6 Cloyster and Gyarados

Cloyster is a Water/Ice-type Pokemon and Gyarados is a Water/Flying-type Pokemon, both with a base stat total of 480. Cloyster’s massive Defense stat along with its offensively strong Ice typing makes it quite the formidable Pokemon. Gyarados is one of the classic “always has been good” Pokemon, while does have a major weakness in Electric attacks, everything else about it being so stellar makes that weakness more than manageable.

Shellder can be found at the Seafoam Islands or Vermillion City using the signature key item, the Super Rod. A Magikarp can be bought from a salesman on Route 4 at the cost of 500 Pokédollars.

5 Articuno

Articuno is an Ice/Flying-type Legendary Pokemon with a base stat total of 485. Articuno is definitely deserving of its Legendary status, with its stats just in general being very impressive. It is incredibly weak to Rock, but with this being Red and Blue, back when good Rock-type moves and  Pokemon were harder to come by, this weakness is not nearly as glaring as it is nowadays, making Articuno a wonderful choice for any team.

Articuno is located on the lowest floor of the Seafoam Islands.

4 Zapdos

Zapdos is an Electric/Flying-type Legendary Pokemon with a base stat total of 490. Everything you could say about Zapdos is positive.

From its amazing Speed and Special stats, it’s a fantastic type combination that only gives it 2 weaknesses, or how accessible it is due to just needing Surf outside of battle to find one, Zapdos can fit on just about any team and serve you very well, that’s just how amazing it is.

To find Zapdos, make your way to the end of the Power Plant.

3 Moltres

Moltres is a Fire/Flying-type Legendary Pokemon with a base stat total of 495. For the final part of the Legendary Bird Trio, we have Moltres, who unfortunately has it very rough in the later gens, despite having the same qualities the other birds have. But like with Articuno, due to this being Gen 1, it shines its absolute brightest here. It doesn’t become available until extremely late in the game, though (Victory Road) so you will have to keep a team slot open if you wish to use one.

Moltres is located on the second floor of Victory Road.

2 Dragonite and Mew

Dragonite is a Dragon/Flying-type Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon and Mew is a pure Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon both with a base stat total of 500. Dragonite is noteworthy for being the only fully evolved Dragon-type Pokemon in the entirety of the first generation. This fact combined with its incredible stats makes it an amazing choice for your team if you’re willing to put up with how long it takes to evolve. Mew is Gen 1’s ultimate Jack of all Trades Pokemon, with it being able to learn every TM and HM, as well as being the powerful Psychic-type, there’s really nothing to complain about it.

A Dratini can be bought at the Celadon Game Corner for 2,800 Coins (Blue) or 4,600 Coins (Red).

While Mew is an event Pokemon that can no longer be obtained through legitimate means, it is possible to find one using the famous Mew Glitch.

1 Mewtwo

Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon with a massive base stat total of 590. “Phenomenal” does not even begin to describe Mewtwo. Its stats are demonstrably stellar with the closest thing to a  “weakness” being its average (at worst) Defense stat. Mewtwo also has a better than usual movepool for Gen 1 standards. As if all of that wasn’t enough, its typing makes it all the stronger, since Psychic’s weaknesses in Ghost and Bug Pokemon were near to non-existent in Red and Blue. The only drawback to Mewtwo is the fact that it’s locked to being postgame only, but that doesn’t undermine how fantastic it is.

Mewtwo is located at the end of the Cerulean Cave, only accessible after becoming The Champion.
