MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was not only supposed to be releasing on Steam and GoG after being an Epic Games Store exclusive for a year, but it was going to receive its new Heroes of the Inner Sphere DLC, which will include a new career mode, new weapons, and new giant mechs to pilot. But the team at Piranha Games has decided to delay both and it’s because of Cyberpunk 2077.
With CD Projekt Red’s title delayed to December 10th, Piranha Games didn’t want to share a release date with it, as it’s expected to be a massive sales success, and it could’ve potentially hurt the sales for MechWarrior 5.
On the plus side, while players will have to wait until spring 2021 to either pick up the game for the first time or return for the new DLC, these releases will also coincide with the newly announced console re-releases, which will bring the game to both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. This will make MechWarrior 5 the first console entry in the series since 2004’s MechAssault 2 and something Piranha Games believes to be the first true MechWarrior experience on consoles.
Piranha Games adds that this delay will only benefit the game in the long-run, as a simultaneous release on PC and consoles will provide more exposure and the extra development time means more work can be done on improving and fine-tuning the campaign mode, the AI, quality of life features, and many other aspects.
A developer vlog that will go into further detail about the delay and answer any questions fans may have about MechWarrior 5‘s future is expected to release on Tuesday, December 1st.
MechWarrior 5 is currently available on PC via the Epic Games Store, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X releases planned as well.
