TV Station Mistakes Red Dead Redemption 2 Screenshot for Real Life

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most graphically impressive games of the past generation. The realism of the world is undeniable, from the gorgeous landscapes to Arthur Morgan’s realistic beard growth. The game is so real-looking, in fact, that a TV station confused it with real life.

A Reddit post has blown up on r/RedDeadOnline. The post claims that someone sent an image into a local news station as a part of a segment about the great outdoors. That local station ended up using the beautiful image, not knowing it was from Red Dead Redemption 2

News station KTVZ 21 in Oregon apparently has an “Out & About” segment that promotes outdoor activities like hiking and landscape photography. In accepting images from viewers to use for the segment, the station chose a suspicious shot that some gamers would recognize. The pine trees, mountains in the distance, and flowing river make for a stunning photo. Of course, the image is from The Game Awards 2018’s game of the year, not some pretty walking trail in Oregon.

An interesting thing to note about Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is that it does cover fictional areas that are made to represent locations across North America. So whoever picked the image at KTVZ 21 has a bit of an excuse, the image does look like something that would be in their backyard.

Part of the reason for such success and great reviews of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the game’s aesthetic, as it truly is a visually stunning video game. Although games, in general, have come a very long way, there aren’t many that would be able to fool someone into thinking it is actually an image of the real world, as this Red Dead Redemption 2 picture did.

The gaming community is quite creative. Just the idea of sending a video game image in hopes to fool a local news station is both silly and brilliant. Fans have done a lot with Rockstar’s game in particular, with one fan even creating a trailer for a would-be Red Dead Redemption 2 western film, thanks in part to just how cinematic and gorgeous the game is. One of the things that is also impressive about the game’s visuals is that it is all on last-gen tech. If or when the game remastered and brought to next-gen, beyond backward compatibility, to take full advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game could look even better.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
