The release of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands has players getting lost in the game all over again. Even after the level squish players are going nuts, with the world’s first level 60 confirmed recently.
That moment of hitting the maximum level presents a question that’s not at all new for World of Warcraft players: what now? In the case of Shadowlands, there’s still plenty to do afterwards. On of the most prominent new mechanics is Renown, which can be gathered for each of the four Covenants in Azeroth’s afterlife. There are a few ways to get Renown and it’s definitely worth pursuing, so here’s a guide to increasing it.
Something to note before jumping into a Renown gathering frenzy is that there is a cap to how much can be earned in a week. While this prevents players from grabbing as much as possible all at once, it also spreads out the Shadowlands experience nicely. This ensures that World of Warcraft is still worth playing week after week.
The most direct way to earn Renown with a Covenant is to progress its story. This is straightforward, relatively easy, and great for anyone who loves World of Warcraft lore. The story of the Shadowlands is front and center, so there’s no reason to ignore it when it gives Renown anyway.
Completing the story takes the form of several quests and dungeons. What players will be doing is unique to each Covenant. For example, Bastion will have players save the Ascension Tower from the rebellious Forsworn Kyrian. Completing the story in this way will eventually become nonviable, simply because there’s only so much story. Still, it’s a great time and source of Renown while it lasts.
Furthermore, no playthrough of a Covenant’s story will be the same for everyone. That Kyrian rebellion can be joined by the player if they don’t agree with Bastion’s problematic Ascension process. This way, players can progress and experiment with different characters.
There are two other mainline ways to earn Renown. One is by taking a trip inside the tower Torghast and saving lost souls from the Maw. Each Covenant will have players hunting for different souls who were supposed to enter their realm.
The other method is collecting Anima and delivering it to the Covenant’s realm. The function of Anima is both currency and energy source, and the raw soulstuff is valuable to everyone in the Shadowlands. Gathering it from quests and turning it in boosts Renown with the faction it’s given to.
If a player falls behind with gathering Renown during the week, it can also be earned through endgame activities. These include Raids, dungeons, and Callings (Shadowlands‘ Emissaries equivalent). These can’t boost Renown past its cap, but work well if players miss the primary methods of gathering it.
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available for PC.
