Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies offers plenty of new features, one of which is a revamped system for intel. Rather than a handful of radios that can be activated in a given map, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can gather many different types of intel that can be read or listened to at the main menu whenever they please.
For players interested in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies storyline, acquiring this intel is a must. Whether it is used to explain the mysterious Dark Aether or get players up to date on the older Samantha Maxis, intel is an important item within the latest iteration of Zombies. With more intel confirmed to be coming to the game in the first season of Black Ops Cold War, players may want to gather the preseason intel fast — and there are a few ways to do it.
While much of the intel in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies is acquired through different means than in previous entries, a few items work like other entries in the series. These static audio logs are always found in the same position and only need to be gathered once, being picked up like any other item drop. However, keep in mind that the D.I.E. Wonder Weapon will be needed to secure some of the audio logs, all of which can be found in these locations:
- Audio Log #1: On the couch in the first room of Nacht, to the left of the room where players can secure the free D.I.E.
- Audio Log #2: To the left of the door that automatically opens within the tunnel.
- Audio Log #3: To the left of the button that turns on Die Machine’s power.
Players must be in the Dark Aether for the next three audio logs to be visible.
- Dark Aether Audio Log #1: To the right of the stairs that lead down to the Pack-A-Punch machine (with the player’s back turned to the machine).
- Dark Aether Audio Log #2: In the Medical Bay side room that is opened when using a Dark Aether fast travel tunnel.
- Dark Aether Audio Log #3: In the Weapons Lab garage, which is also opened via the use of a Dark Aether tunnel.
The final two audio logs can be acquired via the use of the D.I.E. wonder weapon.
- D.I.E. Audio Log #1: On the Nacht roof, there is a box players can shoot with the D.I.E., breaking the box and scattering its contents on the floor. An audio log should be found where the box landed, alongside a vial that is used to upgrade the D.I.E.
- D.I.E. Audio Log #2: Inside Nacht, after going up the stairs near the couch where a previous piece of intel sat, players can find the final Audio log. Turn around at the top of these stairs and use the sucking feature of the D.I.E. (activated with the ADS button) to pull a radio across a barrier. Players can also pull over a canister used to upgrade the D.I.E.
There are many other ways to unlock the intel of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies, with the first being artifacts. Artifacts are acquired through the completion of Die Maschine’s main quest easter egg, as well as acquiring every upgraded version of the D.I.E. wonder weapon. Like Audio Logs, each artifact only needs to be acquired once, with one completion of the map’s main easter egg giving players every artifact they will need.
There are three other repeatable intel methods, with the first being random drops from mini bosses. The Megaton enemies are certainly some challenging foes, though players should be careful to examine their bodies after every kill. Megatons have a small chance to drop intel, which should show up as a yellow pickup for players to acquire. For those on the PlayStation platform, Megatons can drop intel in the exclusive Zombies Onslaught game mode as well — though the intel will also be exclusive to Onslaught and different from the intel found in the main mode.
The next repeatable intel method sees players acquiring transmissions, with two transmissions able to be picked up each game. One transmission location can be found in Nacht Der Untoten, resting where players used to camp on the original version of the map. Another transmission location sits in the pond area, directly across from the Quick Revive perk machine and to the right of the explosive tunnel entrance. These transmission tables will provide intel on Requiem and Omega Group respectively, with the former being the CIA-backed group controlled by the player and the latter being the villainous Russian organization experimenting with the Dark Aether.
Finally, players can earn a few pieces of intel every game from completing trials in the Control Room. After every few trials, a challenge will appear that reads “Intel Trial.” Players will want to focus on progressing this specific trial, as it will always reward a piece of intel that can be claimed from the main console. Making use of the Gallo SA12 shotgun and doing these trials on early rounds is recommended, as some can be tough to pull off on higher rounds. While the exact number is unconfirmed, players can only get a few pieces of intel from trials each game, so once players stop getting intel trials it is safe to stop grinding them out for the remainder of the match.
With Black Ops Cold War Zombies players having plenty of intel to grind out alongside the coffin dance easter egg and main quest, there seems to be plenty to do in Die Maschine. Aside from providing major information on the game mode’s story, intel unlocks calling cards, making seasonal gathering of the collectibles a must for completionists. With new intel drops only a few weeks away, players interested in the items should start scouring the map for audio logs and progressing through trials as soon as possible.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
