Bugsnax: How to Save All Grumpuses and Get the Survivor Trophy

Before Bugsnax officially released, the ominous undertones in its trailers and promotion led some fans to believe that the game was secretly a horror game. That didn’t turn out to be entirely true, but there are still some very dark undertones and uncomfortable subject matters that show that the theory wasn’t too far off.

There will be major spoilers for Bugsnax‘s big reveal ahead, so players still going through the game wanting to experience the story for themselves should stop reading now. Rest assured that even if the player fails to save all the Grumpuses and get the Survivor trophy, they can always try again.

Back when Bugsnax‘s PS5 trophy list was revealed, fans couldn’t help but notice the Survivor trophy, requrining players to ensure the survival of all the Grumpuses. At first it was thought this could relate to some kind of hunger mechanic in the game, but now it’s clear that the game’s finale sees Bugsnax trying to kill the Grumpuses.

During the final scenes of the game, players use weaponized variants of their Bugsnak catching tools in order to defend the inhabitants of Snaxburg from their appetizing assailants. If any Grumpus is fully transformed by the end of their sequence during the Escape from Snaktooth Island, they’ll turn into Bugsnax themselves and become one with the island. The primary method of keeping them all alive is to not allow any Bugsnax to reach them, as the Grumpuses will eat any Bugsnax that get too close.

Aside from this, it helps if players haven’t fed their Grumpuses too many Bugsnax leading up to this point, but for those that already have fully transformed Grumpuses, there’s still a way to get this trophy. If the player has completed all the sidequests for a specific Grumpus before starting Filbo’s final welcome back party, that character will be unable to die during the final sequence. Players that have completed every sidequest can even sit back and watch as the Grumpuses fend off the Bugsnax themselves during the final story mission.

Keeping all the Grumpuses alive will award the player the Survivor trophy and give some unique dialogue as well. On the beach after escaping, each Grumpus will explain what they plan to do next, and the credits scene shows where they ended up. Finally, keeping all Grumpuses alive is the only way players can see the true ending of Bugsnax, in which C. Clumby Clumbernut (the player character’s boss at GNN) has a cryptic conversation with what is presumably a member of the Grumpinati and a Strabby escapes off the player’s boat onto the mainland.

Bugsnax is available now on PS5.
