Next year, big things are happening to the Resident Evil franchise with the release of Resident Evil 8, the Netflix animated series called Infinite Darkness, and a reboot live-action film. Among the many projects that fans want to see from the franchise, only one remains unconfirmed, Resident Evil 4 remake.
Ever since the release of Resident Evil 3 remake earlier this year, fans of the survival-horror franchise have wondered which Resident Evil game Capcom will remake next. Initially, many thought that the next remake would be Code Veronica, given that it is the next game after RE3. But, rumors heavily suggest that it will be Resident Evil 4. Now, for those wondering what the status of the RE4 remake, here are all the rumors and theories so far.
This year, Capcom released a survey to its fans asking which Resident Evil game they want to see get remade next. Although the studio did not confirm that a remake is in development, the fact that it is asking the opinion of fans is a clear indication that the studio is open to reviving another classic title in the franchise. According to notable leakers, who have accurately predicted Resident Evil projects in the past, a remake of Resident Evil 4 is in the early stages of development, alongside Resident Evil 8. Given that RE4 remains one of the most popular games in the franchise, it is understandable that Capcom wants to capitalize on the popularity of the game for its next remake.
Additionally, rumors claim that Capcom’s M-Two studio is handling the Resident Evil 4 remake. It is worth remembering that Capcom is no stranger to letting external Capcom teams develop games while using internal assets. Both Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes were made using this strategy, so it is not at all unlikely that Capcom will apply the same treatment to Resident Evil 4. Interestingly enough, rumors also claim that Capcom initially approached Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami to lead the remake, but he declined but has provided “informal advice.”
Another interesting rumor that is currently out there is that Capcom is planning to introduce a new storyline in the remake of Resident Evil 4. As per rumors, the remake will mostly revolve around the original story of Resident Evil 4, but Capcom will expand on a storyline in hopes of providing a fresh experience to veteran Resident Evil players. While specifics of the new storyline wasn’t revealed, Resident Evil leaker Dust Golem teased that it may have something to do with Dr. Salvador. To the uninitiated, Dr. Salvador is the name given to the Chainsaw Man, which players can obtain via Bottlecaps or special trophies given to Leon by the Merchant. The additional storyline may focus on how the Chainsaw Man came to be.
It is worth noting that past Resident Evil remakes also introduced new storylines on top of the original plot. In the remake of the first Resident Evil game, Capcom added the Lisa Trevor storyline, which revolves around the daughter of the Spencer Mansion’s architect, and was kidnapped by the Umbrella Corporation to use as a test subject. In the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom expanded the roles of Marvin Branagh and Robert Kendo. Lastly, the reimagining of Resident Evil 3 also introduced new storylines, but some fans were not happy with the changes given that it strayed too far from its source material.
Although the Resident Evil 4 remake is all but confirmed, there is still a possibility that it might not happen at all. While this theory seems unlikely, given the hype for the game’s reimagining, it is possible that Capcom would prioritize other Resident Evil games, such as Code Veronica before Resident Evil 4. For now, it appears that Capcom is focusing its resources on developing Resident Evil 8. The most concrete proof is the recent Capcom leak which puts it in 2022, yet while this leak is more reliable than some, these are just plans. And plans can always be scrapped.
For players anxious to hear an official statement regarding RE4, no announcement will likely be made until RE8 is out to the public. Luckily for fans, Resident Evil 8 is scheduled to release next year, so an announcement may be made immediately after its release.
Resident Evil 4 remake is rumored to be in development.
