Unfortunately, Far Cry 6 has been delayed from its February 2021 slot without a confirmed new release date. As unfortunate as it may be, the game may hopefully benefit from some extra time in the oven, and while the majority of the game is likely complete, there’s likely a lot for fans to digest when Far Cry 6 releases.
After all, Far Cry 6 is an entry of many firsts. It is the first game to feature a big city as a location, found in the Cuba-inspired country, it is the first game to feature a protagonist whose role is not that of an outsider (Yara is FC6 protagonist Dani’s home), and it is the first game where the secondary antagonist is a child. Far Cry 6‘s Diego isn’t his father, and it seems to be that Dani may play some role in determining just who Diego is.
Diego is the son of Far Cry 6 dictator Anton Castillo, but Diego cannot control the circumstances of his birth. It’s clear that Anton’s relationship with his father, who met an untimely end, informs how he instructs and teaches Diego. The Far Cry 6 trailer shows Anton put a grenade in Diego’s hands after all, and as any child would be, Diego is clearly scared.
That fear of his father will likely play a big role, as Anton and Diego’s dynamic may define much of the game’s story. How remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Diego, as the first secondary antagonist to be a child, isn’t just a cookie cutter villain. If anything, it’s hard to say that he’s a villain in Far Cry 6 at all. He’s just a child with evil father, but despite all of this, Diego likely still loves his dad.
There’s simply no way Ubisoft has players fight and/or kill Diego…at least as a child. Anton, on the other hand, is fair game, and that’ll likely serve as a major point for the story. This begs the question: what becomes of Diego after? It would be interesting if Diego’s role after his father death impacted the gameplay, but at the very least, it’s likely that Dani somehow influences him throughout the story, while making a decision at the very end. If the players gets the chance to execute or spare Far Cry 6‘s Anton for his crimes, that’s likely to directly reflect back on Dani.
At the end of the story, sparing Anton would suggest a prologue where Diego turns the country into a democracy or republic, becoming a fair president and leading the country to prosperity. From prison, Anton would look on and Diego would still have a father. On the other hand, killing Anton could lead Diego to become another Iron Fist dictator leading the country down the same path as his father. If this were the ending, though, that implies a problem of an unresolved narrative. Everything Far Cry 6‘s protagonist Dani and the revolution fought for would have been for naught.
Featuring a time skip would be something new for Far Cry 6, but if the game is experimenting with its formula, this “frozen in time” country would be the best place for it. Not only would this potentially put players into a direct conflict with Anton, but perhaps in a more intimate fight with Dani later on. Of course, for now this all speculation, but the facts of the matter seem simple enough: Anton is bad, Diego is not necessarily bad, and the circumstances of the game are likely to use this dynamic, hopefully in unique ways.
Far Cry 6 is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
