Norse mythology has been seeing a bit of a boom in video games in recent years, with God of War and this month’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla being among the most notable examples. Most of the games so far have come from western developers, but the Korean MMORPG ODIN: Valhalla Rising shows that eastern developers are starting to put their own spins on the tales of Odin, Thor, and the rest of the gods and legends from Norse lore.
It’s been known for some time that the game was in the works at developer Lionheart Studios, going under the name Project Odin. Following a formal unveiling earlier this year, Kakao Games, publisher of fellow Korean MMO Black Desert Online, showed the game off at the recent G-Star 2020 exhibition with two new trailers.
ODIN: Valhalla Rising is shaping up to be a rather ambitious title. From the look of it, the game will let players explore vast and detailed open-world locations from across Norse myth, with the trailers highlighting the wide plains of Midgard, the rocky forts of Jotunheim, the snowy reaches of Nidavellir, and the dense woods of Alfheim. What’s more, players will have a wide variety of characters to interact with and mounts to get around on, such as horses and wolves but also flying creatures like eagles and dragons.
Right now, the game is slated to debut sometime next year, but the question remains as to when it might launch outside Korea. That remains to be seen, but given the success that other Korean MMOs like Black Desert Online and Blade & Soul, as well as the growing awareness of high-profile Korean games in the west, it’s likely that it will happen sooner or later.
ODIN: Valhalla Rising will launch in 2021 for Mobile and PC.
