Pokemon: The 10 Biggest Things That Happened To The Franchise In 2020

Over the course of the franchise’s history, the Pokemon series has evolved and branched out numerous times. Most can’t even keep track of all the spin-off titles that have released in the wake of Pokemon Red and Green‘s release in 1996. For fans of Pocket Monsters, this is surely a good problem to have. Especially since this has led to TV shows, Manga, and various other media as well.

With increasing intensity, hype for unreleased games has made news of any data from them a commodity. When something particularly novel or unexpected surfaces, fans can almost begin foaming at the mouth for more. With the generation of such interest, some announcements made by various production companies for the games, anime, and other branches can leave lasting impacts on both new appreciators and longtime trainers.

10 Greninja Is Named Pokemon Of The Year

Very early in the year, trainers everywhere were able to begin voting for which Pocket Monsters were their favorites. When polling was concluded, Greninja, the lithe Water pokemon, was named the winner and given the title of ‘Pokemon of the Year‘. It was rightly deserved, with them beating the closest competitors by nearly 40’000 votes. Lucario, Mimikyu, and Charizard were the closest runners-up.

9 Mythical Pokemon Revealed

At the end of February, a previously unknown pokemon was discovered; a mythical one. Zarude, the Rogue Monkey Pokemon, was unveiled to the world. This Dark and Grass-type monster is apparently very aggressive and is openly hostile to any strangers who approach their home deep in the jungle. If one is unlucky enough to go toe-to-toe with this beast, be prepared for attacks involving sharp claws and trees being swung around like baseball bats.

8 The First Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Remake Appears

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is the first time that a Mystery Dungeon game has received a remake. Games in the main series have done so more, but a remake of a title from another beloved Pokemon game series gives many fans hope for the future. Rescue Team DX is a remake of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team and contains the same charming gameplay but with updated graphics and all the benefits that come with being released on the Nintendo Switch.

7 The Pokemon Company Cancels 2020 Championship Series

Like many events around the world, this gathering of trainers got canceled in March due to Covid-19 related restrictions. It’s odd to look back more than half a year ago and reflect on the state things were in back then.

Things may not be the best right now, but everyone is at least somewhat more knowledgeable about what is happening. Most of 2020 has gone by without any big events, but that may be changing in the New Year.

6 New Attacks

After the Isle of Armor, the first expansion pass, of Pokemon Sword and Shield was released there was a wealth of new content to enjoy for players who had purchased it. Some of this content was new and powerful attacks. The first are a Flying attack called Dual Wing and an Ice attack called Triple Axel. Both of these are multiple-hit moves that strike foes repeatedly. The next two are Grassy Glide and the Psychic move Expanding Force. These two are also damage-dealing attacks but are more situational in that they require specific types of terrain to be active to unleash their full effects. Lastly is Burning Jealousy, a fire move that hurts and burns all other Pokemon in play.

5 The Pokemon Anime’s Production Goes On Temporary Hiatus

Fans of the anime following Ash Ketchum’s adventures as he travels new lands with news friends was put on hold for a while during Spring and Summer. Due to Covid-19 concerns, production was halted as employees were instructed to put their safety before their work. From the end of April until the beginning of June there were no new episodes, but soon after this production resumed to the relief of those who enjoy the series.

4 New Pokemon

With the arrival of the second expansion pass, Crown Tundra, there came new Pokemon. Calyrex, the regal emblem for this DLC, along with their two steeds: the Ice-type Glastrier and the Ghost-type Spectier, gallop onto the scene to the joy of most fans.

The Regis have also acquired some new members in the Electric-type Regieleki and the Dragon-type Regidrago. Now trainers can have a full team of Regis if they desire.

3 New Regional Forms

With Crown Tundra also came some new regional forms for known Pokemon, like the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Keeping with the theme of the previous regional form reveals, these powerful Pokemon have received new typing and moves to accommodate this. Articuno is now a Flying and Psychic-type, Zapdos is Flying and Fighting-type, while Moltres is Flying and Dark-type. Some other fan favorites have received new regional and Gigantimax forms as well.

This mobile game has been out for about 4 years now and 2020 has been one of the most profitable yet. The company that makes Pokemon Go has managed this by implementing aspects that allow players to enjoy the game safely, has added a lot of new content, and even has taken fan feedback so seriously as to alter aspects of the game to better suit the needs of players.

1 Trailer Revealed For The Next Pokemon Movie

In early November, a trailer was released for an upcoming Pokemon movie that is planned to be released in 2021. From the footage and the title, it’s apparent that this movie will be about Zarude, the mythical Pokemon, and a human boy named Koko who Ash and Pikachu meet deep in a forest. There are strong hints that Koko was raised by a Zarude and believes that he is also a Pokemon. Many fans are likely eager to see the new mythical Pokemon in action and also are probably looking forward to learning of Koko’s mysterious past and how he came to be raised by Pokemon.
