After a few months of anticipation, Bandai Namco has announced the final addition to the season 2 roster of fighters, with the return of a classic character to its popular weapon fighter, SoulCalibur 6, coming this December.
Revealed in a new trailer, Hwang is being added to the ever-expanding roster for SoulCalibur 6, along with a free update that adds a new stage to fight in, more costumes for characters in the game, and more additions to the character creator for players to mess around with.
The addition of Hwang to SoulCalibur 6 has been a long time coming, with the character not being playable for nearly 15 years, since SoulCalibur 3 on the PlayStation 2. Just like SetSuka, who Bandai Namco added earlier in the year, Hwang returns to the series looking quite different from his last appearance back in 2005.
Gone are his green and blue getups of the past with Hwang now sporting a dark garb and cloak reminiscent of Bloodborne. Hwang also features talismans in combat that can be used both offensively and defensively, along with a more impactful version of his signature kicks. Fans of the character need not worry, however, as Hwang still wields his classic swords.
In addition to the new character, Bandai Namco is also releasing a free update to the game that adds a new stage called Motien Pass Ruins. Players can also expect more Create-A-Soul parts based on the classic Tekken characters King, Xiaoyu, Paul, and Sugar. Finally, the new update includes new free playable episodes based on Mitsurugi and Nightmare.
Bandai Namco has had to make some significant changes to regularly scheduled tournaments this year due to the impact of Covid-19, with the publisher canceling tournaments involving SoulCalibur, Tekken, and Dragonball FighterZ. While this didn’t preclude any unofficial locally organized events, the publisher did pull support for major tournaments scheduled throughout the year in an effort to keep those participating in the tournaments and event organizers safe and sound as stay-at-home restrictions came into place.
Released in October 2018, SoulCalibur 6 was well-reviewed by critics and was seen by fans as a welcome return of the classic fighting series with the story being rebooted in a separate timeline. with the game’s release, Bandai Namco also added several features for newbies to the series, with SoulCalibur 6 also featured an overall more colorful tone reminiscent of the original SoulCalibur. Whatever Bandai Namco has planned in the future for the game, fans likely won’t hear about it until 2021.
Soul Calibur 6 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
