The Batman, DC’s eternally upcoming superhero film directed by Matt Reeves, may have just gotten a little less mysterious thanks to some nice new photos. A multitude of recent aerial shots now give excited fans a new perspective on some of the movie’s sets, and there’s a lot going on.
There’s been plenty of buzz around The Batman, whether from the standard delays everyone expects in 2020 or news about film lead Robert Pattinson testing positive for COVID-19 (don’t worry, he’s better now), so thankfully these new bits of info is much more in the “interesting” category rather than the “suspenseful” one. Not to say the two are mutually exclusive, but it’s generally better and less strain on those prone to hyperventilation when they are.
These new set photos show off a different side of Gotham City. That side has a lot of blue screens and scaffolding. Perhaps the most exciting is what appears to be an exterior set for the iconic Batcave, the titular character’s little hidey hole where he goes to brood in private. Set in an imposing rock face, the entrance to Batman’s time out room looks almost as gritty and intimidating as the man himself.
The streets of Gotham also got their time to shine, with lots of sets that admittedly look a bit anticlimactic with their guts showing. Honestly, some of the sets are almost reminiscent of that now classic trope of old western movie sets with flat cutouts in place of buildings, but to be fair, these ones definitely look impressive when one focuses entirely on the parts of the façade that are actually meant to be seen. The garbage-strewn alleys around the crumbling buildings paint a vivid picture of the type of setting fans can expect from The Batman.
Another notable shot seemed to feature an outdoor ice rink set being built, suggesting perhaps a setting for a tense meeting between some of the film’s eclectic cast of characters. Along with several other snow-covered sets, the film seems to be hammering its winter setting home. There’s something about winter that apparently attracts Batman writers like fruit flies to groceries older than five minutes. Maybe it’s the contrast of his black costume to the white snow (which defeats the purpose of his whole stealth shtick, but whatever) or maybe everyone just really likes Christmas. Who knows? Probably someone willing to do more research.
Eager fans have plenty to sink their teeth into with these photos, so go ahead and have at them. The Batman is still a way’s off for a multitude of likely still growing reasons, so it’s probably best to take any bits of info given. Hey, maybe the waiting will make it that much better. Or maybe it’ll be Duke Nukem Forever. Who knows?
The Batman currently plans to release on March 4, 2022.
