Video Tries to Determine How Many Bananas Are Required to Make a Car Spin Out Like Mario Kart

For those that consider themselves gamers, there’s a very high chance that Mario Kart is a game they’ve played before. While no one has ever hailed that franchise for realism or accurate simulation of actual driving, it is still one of the most popular racing games. As such, it is also the inspiration for this episode of Scumbag Labs.

Video game science channels can be a lot of fun. After all, who doesn’t want to know just how much a full set of diamond armor would cost or whether or not Goku’s weighted clothing would help someone get stronger, but Scumbag Labs takes things a different direction. In its video about Mario KartScumbag Labs refers to itself as the “best internet science show that doesn’t involve science.”

In this episode, the guys at Hoonigan try to determine how many bananas it will take to spin out a real car. Rather than using actual Go Karts, though, they instead decide to use an Audi Quattro. Needless to say, the tests were mostly inconclusive, but there are some interesting tidbits.

As the video above shows, even 1000 banana peels isn’t enough to make the car actually spin out to the degree that karts do in Mario Kart, but this likely doesn’t come as a surprise to most. There is one instance in which the driver loses control of the vehicle, but otherwise the bananas mostly serve to slow them down. This doesn’t really answer the question of how many bananas it would take, but the driver gives some valuable insight to answering this question towards the end of the video.

While driving on the bananas, the driver says that it feels similar to driving on ice or hydroplaning on water, but that after getting off the banana peels things go back to normal. In order to actually make the car spin out, they’d likely need a much longer stretch of bananas, or alternatively a less skilled driver. They could also use a less reputable car in order to get that effect, but at the moment there’s no data for that.

What they do discover is that when compared to three laps without the bananas there, the inclusion of this obstacle slows down the driver by about one second per lap. While this may not seem like much, the laps were typically 12 seconds long without bananas, making this a significant speed reduction in terms of racing against other drivers that aren’t hindered by banana peels.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is available now on Switch.
