With Alex Mason returning in Black Ops Cold War, newer fans of the series are probably curious about Mason’s past. From his first appearance in Black Ops 1, fans of the game came to know and love Mason and his adventures. His later appearance in Black Ops II gave fans more information about Mason’s life, even giving a little look at his personal life.
While some aspects of Mason’s life could be figured out from the campaign, some aspects had to be found by the players. This could come in the form of intel or the hidden terminal in the first Black Ops.
10 Father Fought At Makin Atoll
Players can find out that Mason’s father was a World War II veteran who fought and was injured at Makin Atoll. Mason’s father was given a Purple Heart and was most likely one of the inspirations for Mason to join the marines.
Makin Atoll could also be a reference to World at War, as that is where the first mission takes place. Despite searching, players will not find any soldier named Mason in World at War.
9 Australian Accent Comes Out
The voice actor for Alex Mason, Sam Worthington, is an Australian. For the most part, players will hear what sounds like an American accent for the protagonist. There are still parts of the campaign where players can hear the Australian accent.
The scene where Mason is forced to play Russian roulette is where players can hear the Australian accent the most. Bowman will refuse to play, being beaten by the Soviet behind him. Mason will scream at the soldier, sounding a little more Australian than usual.
8 Born in Alaska
Going through files about Mason in the games will reveal he was born in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is one of the factors that causes Mason to join the army, as the threat of the Cold War was closer to him. Players can also see that Mason goes back to Alaska after leaving the CIA for a time.
During this time, Mason gets married and has a son. Alaska is also where Hudson finds Mason in Black Ops II, asking Mason to come back to the CIA and to rescue Woods.
7 Has A Gravestone
The ending of Black Ops II can go one of two ways, with one option having Alex Mason die. If Mason does die, one of the epilogues will have Woods and Mason’s son going to Alex’s grave. As of now, there is no canonical ending for Black Ops II regarding Mason, so he could have been killed in combat.
6 Can Live To 93
In the other ending, Mason survives being shot. He is now 93 at this point, going to surprise Woods with a visit. It is also at this point Mason is reunited with his son, who he has not seen for about 40 years.
While it is unknown what Mason was doing during this gap of time, it is nice to see him alive and well. Maybe a future game will tell players which ending in canon, while also showing what Mason was doing during this time.
5 Referenced in Nuketown
In the multiplayer map Nuketown, players can find a mailbox that says ‘Mason’ on the side of it. This is a reference to Alex Mason, with the other house on the map having the name ‘Woods’ on the mailbox. It’s nice to think the two buddies live close together — even if it is in a nuclear testing town.
Sadly, the two houses will be destroyed at the end of each match. Hopefully, Mason has some good home insurance.
4 Terminal password is ‘PASSWORD’
Players are able to access a terminal in Black Ops 1 while on the game’s main menu. The player needs to break free of the chair by tapping the trigger buttons, allowing them to walk over to a terminal.
Players will be able to put in passwords and usernames for certain characters in the game. Humorously enough, Mason’s password is simply ‘PASSWORD’. Players can find an email on his account from Hudson, with Hudson saying he will change Mason’s password.
3 Father Gives Up On Him
Players can find some emails from Mason’s father, with each one being a little more depressing. The first email tells Mason his mother is sick and that he needs to come home. The second will say it is the tenth letter the father sent with no response. Mason will be informed his mother already died and that there will be a service in 5 days.
Mason’s father will end the message by saying if Mason is there, he will be considered dead. The last letter will be the saddest. Mason’s father says Mason had failed and that Mason should have died in Vorkuta.
2 Has A Fake Passport
During the mission to Rebirth Island, Mason uses a fake passport to gain entrance. It is shown during the mission’s introduction, showing Mason is using the name Willem Van Der Berg. It is also a Dutch passport, most likely making it easier for Mason to gain access to the island.
1 Potentially Killed Kennedy
John F. Kennedy makes an appearance in Black Ops 1, briefly meeting with Mason. Throughout the game and even into Black Ops II, it is hinted that Mason was Kennedy’s assassin. Mason was in Dallas on the day of Kennedy’s assassination, with a photo at the end of Black Ops 1 showing Mason in the crowd.
When Mason is fighting Dragovich at the end of the game, Mason will say Dragovich tried to make him kill his president. Dragovich will question Mason, making it seem that Mason was the assassin. It could be assumed Mason is not the assassin, as he still works for the CIA 20 years later.
