Nobody does weird quite likely Hidetaka “SWERY” Suehiro, creator of cult classics such as Deadly Premonition and D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die. Weird is exactly how one would describe The Good Life, the upcoming Animal Crossing style life simulator in which the player can transform into a cat or dog. A collaboration between Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust creator Yukio Futatsugi and SWERY, two years after its initial Kickstarter campaign, The Good Life finally has a solid release window and publisher.
Originally planned for release in late 2019, before being delayed to spring and then later fall 2020, The Good Life is now slated to release in summer 2021, with SWERY also announcing that the game has found a publisher in Irregular Corp, who will publish the game on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One upon release. The publisher will release the game digitally, with no physical editions currently announced outside of the Kickstarter and slacker backer rewards.
Alongside the release date and publisher announcement, developer White Owls Inc. has announced that The Good Life will receive a full English dub at launch. Furthermore, Switch visual novel Murder by Numbers‘ director Ed Fear has announced via Twitter that he will be responsible for directing the game’s English voice over as well as some work on the game’s script. The game’s publisher has promised that the dub will feature English actors portraying its English characters (as the game is set in rural England) with American actors portraying the American characters.
The developer has also ensured that The Good Life‘s publisher will be performing thorough bug checking prior to the game’s release, likely to avoid some of the controversy Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise faced regarding its performance upon release. In the latest Kickstarter update, SWERY states “Personally, I want to deliver The Good Life to you all as quickly as possible. But I also understand after working on it so hard for such a long time that just a little more TLC will make it a lot better overall in the end. That’s why I hope you’ll give us all the time to further polish what we’ve built up.”
Given that White Owls Inc. has shipped two games within the time since The Good Life‘s announcement, it is understandable why the game may need some more time to polish before it’s ready for release, along with the infamy surrounding the technical shortcomings of SWERY’s titles in the past. The Kickstarter updates, as well as the game’s trailers demonstrate this to be one of the most ambitious titles the team has ever created however, especially coming as a collaboration with Yukio Futatsugi, who has not released a game since the 2013 Xbox One launch title Crimson Dragon.
The Good Life will release in summer 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game will also launch as an Xbox Game Pass title.
