Doom Eternal Comes with a Free Copy of Doom 64 on the Switch

For anyone who may be excited about Doom Eternal releasing on the Nintendo Switch, a bonus has just been revealed. The release date for Doom Eternal on the Switch was finally announced with a snazzy new trailer, with the game becoming available on December 8, 2020. For those who have been waiting a long time for the game, Bethesda is sweetening the pot with an all-time classic.

Doom 64 is coming with every digital copy of Doom Eternal on the Switch for a limited time as a bonus. For those who pre-ordered the game, and for anyone who purchases Doom Eternal by December 22, 2020, Bethesda is tossing in the iconic Nintendo 64 shooter.

Doom Eternal is considered a game of the year candidate by many, including this year’s The Game Awards 2020. Along with Doom 64 copy, those how pre-order the game or buy it by December 22nd will also receive the Rip and Tear DLC pack, which includes the Doot Revenant Skin for multiplayer, the Throwback Shotgun Weapon Skin, and a remixed campaign level called Cultist Base Master Level.

In some ways, this bonus Doom 64 game may help soften the blow for those who were hoping to get the newest Doom title physically. Recently it was revealed that the physical version of Doom Eternal on the Nintendo Switch had been canceled, which made some Nintendo fans unhappy, as there is still a large subset of fans who like to purchase only physically, if possible. After waiting almost nine months since the game released on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, however, it’s nice to simply finally have the game. The bonus wasn’t really expected, so it’s certainly exciting.

One thing to note about how Bethesda and iD Software are handling this release is the fact that the developer did receive a limited run physical edition of Doom 64. For Doom Eternal, however, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Even after 23 years, Doom 64 is a compelling experience. For those who loved the game when it released back in 1997, jumping back into the world of Doom 64 is a wonderful nostalgia trip. And for anyone who hasn’t yet had the opportunity to play it, Doom 64 being a free bonus with Doom Eternal allows fans to see just how far the series has come, including how it has evolved while holding on to its roots.

Doom Eternal is now available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions currently in development and a Switch port landing on December 8.
