It’s always a bit surreal to hear a familiar voice in a video game. While celebrity cameos aren’t uncommon in games, and it’s becoming more common for actors to pick up roles in triple-a titles, it can still throw people off-guard when they bump into someone they recognize. As it turns out, Tyler, The Creator is in Grand Theft Auto 5.
A tweet posted by Twitter user @flackoyee has gone viral, showing off Tyler, The Creator’s voice in Grand Theft Auto 5, which seems to be attached to a random NPC. However, anyone familiar with Tyler’s work will immediately be able to recognize him, in large part due to how unique the artist’s voice is.
The voice lines aren’t very long, in fact, they’re more like quips than anything, but it’s still interesting to hear him in the game. Tyler, The Creator has some music featured in Grand Theft Auto 5, so it’s clear that he has had some semblance of a relationship with Rockstar at least in that regard. Grand Theft Auto games typically incorporate real-world music to make the world feel authentic, so there’s nothing out of the ordinary there.
While seeing Tyler, The Creator’s character resurface after seven years is certainly interesting, Tyler himself tweeted about it all the way back in 2013, though he stated that he voices “random people” in the game, which implies that there are others around Los Santos that also have his voice. A few people have shared videos interacting with Tyler, The Creator’s character, and he appears to be the same person in each one, so it’s unclear if he can be found anywhere else in the game.
Tyler, The Creator has since acknowledged the discovery in the form of a retweet of the clip, but doesn’t appear to have said anything else on the topic. Grand Theft Auto 5 is full of Easter eggs, and even after seven years, players are stuck trying to solve some of its mysteries. How much is left to uncover is anyone’s guess.
Meanwhile, fans are still waiting for any news related to Grand Theft Auto 6. Rumors indicate that the game is still a long ways off, so it may be some time before anyone is able to get their hands on it. With new consoles on the market opening things up for more power, Rockstar may be able to drastically improve the core formula and scale of the game, but it will be a while before anyone knows for sure.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
