Some PS5 Consoles Were Made With Louder Fans Than Others

Sony’s PS5 console has been out for several weeks now, and reception to the console has been largely positive. Demand for the console has been incredibly high, with the official PlayStation Twitter account confirming that the PS5 is Sony’s biggest console launch ever.

However, the PS5’s launch has not been without its sporadic issues and controversies. Thanks to the recent reporting of a French news outlet, it’s been discovered that Sony is using two different fan models in the PS5 and one of the fan models is louder than the other.

The PS5 hasn’t been the smoothest console launch ever for some users. There have been a plethora of console owners who have taken to social media to document the issues that they’ve had with their consoles. In some cases, PS5 consoles are outright dying for some unlucky players. Of course, many of these cases are simply outliers among the sea of console owners who have experienced little to no issues with Sony’s newest console. However, it seems that some of these issues, particular in relation to fan noise, might be because of Sony’s manufacturing.

Recently, a French news outlet called Les Numeriques reported that two of the PS5 consoles the outlet owned made completely different fan noises. Upon performing a teardown of both consoles, the outlet discovered that each PS5 console housed a completely different fan model. Unfortunately, one of the consoles produced a louder humming noise than the other because of the difference in fan models. This means that depending on the model of fan that certain PS5s have inside of them, the console may be louder while the fans are operating.

However, Les Numeriques wasn’t satisfied with simply testing two different units. The outlet opened up five separate units: one review unit and four others purchased by members of the staff. Out of the five different units, three housed the louder fan model while only two housed the quieter fan. Additionally, though this is still as of yet unconfirmed, rumors are circulating online that a third fan model appeared in Sony’s official PS5 teardown video and is housed in review units sent to media influencers and VIP customers. According to those rumors, that third model is the quietest of the three fans.

Unfortunately for consumers, there is no way of knowing which fan model is housed inside a PS5 unit until after it’s purchased. Even then, owners would have to disassemble it themselves to find out definitely which fan model they own. Still, the audible difference in the fan models is fairly negligible, though one may notice a difference if the PS5 is an a smaller room, like a bedroom. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan recently spoke about issues launching the PS5 during the pandemic, and this fan situation may very well be a byproduct of manufacturing difficulties.

The PlayStation 5 is available now.
