There is an old turn of phrase in English that goes: “May you live in interesting times.” While it sounds like a blessing of sorts, these days it’s mostly used as an ironic reference to the many ways in which the world currently appears to be on fire both metaphorically and literally. Despite all of the problems that loom overhead, Americans recently concluded their Thanksgiving celebrations and everything that typically goes along with that. In less interesting times that also usually coincides with at least one or more huge blockbuster films releasing and raking in huge amounts of money. Films like Frozen and Coco would open in this time slot hoping to lure the hundreds of thousands of Americans on break and eager to spend their money.
This year however, due to all the ‘interesting’ things happening in the world, going to the movies is now not a particularly great idea, and so blockbuster films are a bit thin on the ground. This has created a bizarre situation where it is now necessary to declare The Croods 2 to be the biggest film of the November holidays. That’s right, having generated about $14.22 million so far, The Croods 2, the sequel to the The Croods, is now the #1 film of the moment. So that’s… interesting.
For those who didn’t see it, The Croods came out in the more innocent year of 2013. It’s about a family of cavemen, so that’s basically the whole premise right there. They have an overprotective father figure but are forced out of their home due to external factors but they’re also funny cavemen; it’s not really an inspired premise but it gets the job done. It was at least successful enough to get its own television show and now a sequel, but the franchise was never really a household name.
In a way, it’s kind of cool to see an underdog film get a chance to claim the top spot, so much as a Dreamworks animated sequel can be credibly called an “underdog” anyways. It’s a nice reminder that there’s room in the world films outside the usual Disney/Star Wars/Marvel umbrella to have their fair share of success. While The Croods will likely never be a cultural touchstone like The Avengers, not everything needs to be, and if there’s any silver lining to all these film delays, it’s that it has removed the long shadow of established names and franchises that can sometimes leaves other films struggling for air. So congratulations The Croods 2, and enjoy your time in the sun.
