The Worms series has been around since the mid-90s, making it one of the longest-running franchises in gaming history. The latest iteration, Worms Rumble, is available now, and the occasion has been marked with an action-packed launch trailer that shows off some of the gameplay.
Worms Rumble is the first game in the series to feature real-time action as opposed to turn-based combat. Worms Rumble players will be able to battle it out in cross-platform multiplayer matches against others in a variety of game modes. The Worms Rumble launch trailer specifically showcases standard Deathmatch, as well as the Last Worm Standing and Last Squad Standing modes. Deathmatch is self-explanatory, whereas the latter two modes function as a Worms battle royale with up to 32 players.
Besides fighting other Worms Rumble players online, players will also be able to enjoy plenty of customization options so they can make their worm truly their own. The game will apparently feature some cosmetic microtransactions as well, with the Legends and All-Stars packs adding costumes based on superheroes, ninjas, wizards, and more.
Those who still aren’t sold in Worms Rumble should note that if they have a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 and a PS Plus subscription, they can try it without any big financial commitment. Worms Rumble is part of the free PS Plus games for December 2020 lineup, serving as the PS5 offering for the month (with the PS4 version available to download free as well). This should go a long way in ensuring that the game’s online multiplayer has a healthy community right off the bat, and it will be interesting to see if this new real-time approach to Worms is enough to keep fans engaged for the long-term.
Worms Rumble is out now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
