Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Bug is Randomly Killing Fireteam Players

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings players a healthy mix of the old and the new. While many were thrilled to see old things like the zombies mode make its triumphant return, others found themselves more excited for new modes like Fireteam. Unfortunately, one aspect of the old that fans didn’t like has also managed to stick around, game breaking bugs.

2019’s Call of Duty titles, Warzone and Modern Warfare, marked a shift in how Activision handles the franchise. Rather than releasing a one and done game, the title was supported all the way up through 2020 to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s release and beyond. Despite this, it was loaded with bugs that would pop up seemingly every other week.

Now Call of Duty: Black Ops hasn’t been free of its own bugs by any means, and that is clear now more than ever as a strange Fireteam bug is killing players before they even land. That said, the chances of it happening are very low, and some think it may not be a bug at all.

The maps in Fireteam are large, and with 40 players dropping from the sky all at once, they’re bound to see each other during the drop. As it happens, if one hits another player while dropping, both will die immediately, never even getting the chance to touch the ground. Given the aforementioned map size, this should happen very infrequently, but it still seems like an odd design choice either way.

Realistically speaking, crashing into someone at these high speeds could have this effect, but it seems as though Treyarch should focus on making the game playable in this instance. Fans seem divided about whether they think it is a bug or actually an intended mechanic, and Treyarch has yet to make any comment about fixing it. Though uncommon, this doesn’t seem to be an isolated incident either, with multiple players claiming that they’ve run into this issue in other games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is still very new, having only released last month, but this is Treyarch’s chance to show what kind of developer it will be. Many players grew extremely frustrated with Infinity Ward towards the end of Modern Warfare‘s life span thanks to what some considered to be inadequate communication, so it would be in Treyarch’s best interest to not take the same path. This may seem like a minor thing, but it sets a precedent moving forward.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
