Old School RuneScape: 7 Pro Tips For Ironman Mode (Free-To-Play)

Ironman Mode contains one of the greatest challenges Old School RuneScape has to offer. Instead of playing cooperatively with the many players logged onto the game, players are forced to be self-sufficient. They are unable to trade items with other players, cannot play most minigames, and are unable to access almost all other group activities.

With Hardcore Ironman and Ultimate Ironman locking even more features away, Old School RuneScape is the perfect game mode for long term fans of the game seeking to prove their skills. Training in Ironman Mode, especially for free-to-play players, takes specific knowledge to avoid having an uphill battle too difficult to overcome.

7 Getting Started

Players starting out are going to need serious gold to purchase everything they need. Thankfully, they don’t need to spend real-life money to get it. The Stronghold of Security offers 10k gold upon completion but some Ultimate Ironman players save this quest in case they die and need funds to help rebuild. Black Knight’s Fortress also grants 2,500 gold as well.

For early experience gains, players should tackle Sheep Shearer, Witch’s Potion, and Vampire Slayer quests. As smithing is an important skill to level, The Knight’s Sword is a must-do quest as soon as possible as it brings players from level 1 to level 29 in the skill.

6 The Best Quests

When choosing quests, free-to-play players may have fewer options but there are still some that players should do after establishing themselves in the game. With some training options unavailable, like buying bones to train prayer, knowing the best quest options becomes more important than ever.

Some examples of good quests include Imp Catcher for magic, The Restless Ghost for prayer, Misthalin Mystery and Goblin Diplomacy for crafting, Doric’s Quest for mining, and Cook’s Assistant for cooking. Other skills like firemaking and woodcutting should still be focused on but can be trained as usual.

5 Choose Enemies Wisely

Melee, Ranged, and Magic are all important skills to train but players that choose to train them against enemies with important drops will find much more success. Cows and Chickens offer hides and bones which will prove to be vital for training crafting and prayer respectively. As players level up they should generally fight against Minotaurs, Hill Giants, Moss Giants, Ankou, and Ogress Warriors in that order.

4 Making Money

Without the ability to sell items at The Grand Exchange, players can find it harder to make enough gold in the game. At the start of the game, random events that yield gems can be lucrative but lack consistency. Players can also collect items like Steel Platelegs and Steel Platebody in the Wilderness and the Lava Maze respectively, but this can be time-intensive.

The best way to make money for free-to-play Ironman players comes from combat training and selling fish. Various drops that players can’t use themselves can be sold to general stores or specialist stores for money, and fish can always bring in a tidy profit while leveling up the fishing skill.

3 Smart Spending

A majority of coins players will be spending is on arrows and runes. However, there are several other items that offer boosts they should also be considering. Beer increases strength by 4% and Energy potions can increase energy by 10% as well. Other useful boost items include Draynor Manor Cabbage, Strength potions, Dwarven stout, and Wizard’s mind bombs. Any armor and weapons should be carefully considered for purchase in case a better option can be found dropped from enemies.

Of course, there’s the armor that this game mode is famous for: Ironman Armor. There are three kinds, one Ironman Mode, one for Hardcore Ironman Mode, and one for Ultimate Ironman Mode. Eventually, players will find better armor, but this starting setup works for the beginning of the game.

2 Law, Nature, And Cosmic Runes

The only way to get these important runes is through drops, so Ironman players being unable to trade with other players, need to know which enemies drop them. Players can travel to Corsair Cove Dungeon and battle Ogress Warriors and Ogress Shamans which drop each of these fairly commonly. Nature and Cosmic runes are dropped most commonly by Dark Wizards and Hill Giants and Law runes are dropped most commonly by Ankou.

Runes are important in Old School RuneScape (it’s in the name of the game) as they are required to cast spells. Especially as Ironman players are on their own, they need to be sure they have the right runes for whatever spell to get out of serious jams

1 Travel Tips

It can be a challenge to save run energy in Ironman but smart players find ways around this. Canoes are excellent for transportation when possible for any players that have a high enough woodworking skill and an axe to use. Otherwise, players need to learn how to use teleports carefully. Home teleports are useful for this and can help get players to an area where it won’t be too far to walk to. Another fast travel tip is to claim to be an outlaw to Shantay at Shantay’s Pass. This will get players automatically transported to the Port Sarim jail which can be faster than running and walking.
