Apex Legends Holo-Day Bash event is underway and adds new cosmetics, in-game holiday decorations, and the limited-time mode Winter Express. The Holo-Day Bash first took place last year, and it seems some fans believe there were not enough changes this year. One fan went as far as saying the Winter Express LTM is a “recycled mode” on Reddit, which prompted a detailed reply from Respawn Developer Daniel Klein.
Klein cites a few changes to the Winter Express mode including the addition of supply ships, new stations, individual loadouts, and some technical changes to reduce downtime between rounds. One fan apparently was not satisfied with the list and replied that it is still a “recycled mode.” Klein once again replied, saying that Winter Express takes more work than fan-favorite LTM Armed and Dangerous and that many fans heavily request LTMs but the number of people playing LTMs in Apex Legends drops off quickly.
Winter Express does have many changes since last year, but the primary objective has remained the same. The Holo-Day Bash cosmetics received some negative feedback for having the same skins as last year, but there are still new skins as well. Many fans are enjoying the Holo-Day Bash, however, some fans will always want new content over returning content. Based on Klein’s response, developers only have a finite amount of time to add content, so events like the Holo-Day Bash are difficult to produce all-new content for.
Klein goes on to defend the Winter Express mode, saying that it is one of the only LTMs that does not experience such a steep drop-off of players and that a lot of work went into the second version. Klein has been very open with the Apex Legends community, and it seems like the developer only wants to provide fans with information and share the experience of designing Apex Legends.
Klein recently joined the Third Party Podcast to discuss statistics in Season 7 of Apex Legends, sharing the most-played legends, their win rate, encounter win rate, and pick rate across different skill levels. Klein received some negative feedback for mentioning a tentative plan to nerf Wraith, which also prompted Respawn Live Balance Designer John Larson to defend the plan as well.
Although some of the fan feedback has been negative, Apex Legends has gotten a lot of great reception for Season 7 with the new legend Horizon, and the new Olympus map. Developers are still hard at work to continue to release new content, and it seems Respawn developers will continue to defend their work and maintain open dialogue with fans.
Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version coming in 2021.
