Within the last few years, Persona has gained a lot of traction and popularity within the gaming community. The release of Persona 5 introduced a lot of new players to the Persona series, and in turn gave them a lot of unexplored content they may not have discovered otherwise. Now, it seems that Persona might be making a greater stance in 2021.
The release of Persona 5 marked not only the return of Persona, but also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the franchise. For many players, it was an exceptional way to celebrate the series and introduce it to a more mainstream audience. Though, it appears the release of Persona 5 and its spin-off games were just the tip of the iceberg.
While speaking at the PlayStation Awards 2020, Atlus producer and director Kazuhisa Wada, who has been around since Persona 2, mentioned the studio has exciting plans for 2021 given that will mark the franchise’s 25th anniversary. Nothing concrete was mentioned outside of the fact that there are plans in the works, but a lot can be surmised from this.
One theory that some of the newer fans may appreciate is that next year could mark the release of Persona 6. While this would be an excellent way to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, the prospect of another installment this early is unlikely. It took eight years for Persona 5 to be developed and released, so another mainline installment may be a few more years down the road.
There are some less ambitious ideas that could be in the works as a way to celebrate the series. A remake of Persona 3 is something that fans have desired for a number of years now. It would mark an excellent return to a title beloved by many, and it would make more sense to remake this game as opposed to remaking Persona 4 considering the recent PC port of Persona 4 Golden was received very favorably.
Another idea would be a remake of Persona 1 and the Persona 2 duology. There is dedicated pool of fans who have been wanting the earliest Persona titles remade for a long time. While Atlus hasn’t paid these games much mind for awhile now, remakes aren’t that far outside the realm of possibility, especially considering that Atlus is putting out a remake of Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne sometime next year. For now, it seems that Persona fans will ultimately just have to wait and find out.
