It’s been four years since the last King of Fighters game released and, since then, fans of the series have had to make do with mobile spin-offs and cameo appearances in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But soon, King of Fighters 15 will officially be revealed next month, following a teaser video that went up today.
King of Fighters 15 was technically already confirmed last year, but SNK has been completely silent about it since and no info was shared at its reveal. According to producer Yasuyuki Oda and creative director Eisuke Ogura, a proper gameplay trailer will release in January, though they have shared a few details to whet fans’ appetites.
Firstly, three characters have been confirmed for the game through concept art. The first two are Kyo and Benimaru, mainstays of the King of Fighters series since the first game, with the latter sporting a design closer to his original appearance, compared to how he looked in King of Fighters 14.
The third is Shun’ei, a character who was first introduced in KoF 14. Ogura admits that they weren’t sure if he was going to be the new protagonist of the series or not, but he will most definitely fill that role in KoF 15.
Ogura and Oda also teased that the way teams will be composed will differ greatly from KoF 14 and that the new game will be the most ambitious entry in the series yet. More information will be revealed periodically throughout 2021.
The announcement follows news that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, became SNK’s largest shareholder. The move drew criticism as he has been accused of multiple human rights violations and the assassination of a Washington Post journalist.
King of Fighters 15 is in development.
