Borderlands 3 is over one-year old and going strong, with Gearbox shocking fans of the franchise when it announced that it would be getting a second season pass. Of course, it’s not a total surprise given that Borderlands 2 only had 1 season pass but that was years ago, but it’s still more pleasant content for Borderlands 3 fans.
Season Pass 2, however, is an entirely different beast from the first. Whereas that one brought in four-story based DLCs featuring returning Vault Hunters like Gage the Mechromancer and Krieg the Psycho, new planets, and brand new stories, this second season pass is split into 2 different gameplay-oriented additions: the Designer’s Cut and the Director’s Cut. The former may very well give some indication of what the latter may contain in BL3.
Looking at the Designer’s Cut addition, there are a few notable things that may inform the Borderlands 3 Director’s Cut. Arms Race is a new game mode that involves roguelike elements, a unique-if-not-altogether-perfect addition to the game. One thing fans have loved, though, is the addition of new Skill trees in Borderlands 3: “Trapper” FL4K, the “Enlightened Flare” Amara, “Bear Mother” Moze, and “The Professional Zane.”
These additions are definitely the highlight of the DLC, but they are also joined by the Multiverse Final Form cosmetics. The latter shows what the characters would have become if not Vault Hunters, which is an odd thing to highlight. Not to mention, “Assassin One” Zane brings back memories of trying to deduce the mysteries of Zer0, 0ne, and FL4K.
So what does this mean for Borderlands 3 Season Pass 2’s Director’s Cut? Right now, there are a few things confirmed to be included. There is supposed to be “Additional Missions,” but this doesn’t sound like a formal story DLC. Instead, it’s likely to be a few smaller side quests, perhaps exploring some tidbits set after the story, and likely through the purview of a “director’s cut.” After all, behind-the-scenes extras are also confirmed, although what that is exactly remains to be seen, but perhaps the most interesting confirmation is new endgame content.
Smaller side quests and extras are good and well, but the main focus of the DLC is likely the new endgame content. It’s likely to be at least on Arms Race’s level, so fans can expect a new way to play, or perhaps an old way. There’s a dedicated Borderlands 3 fanbase who want to bring raids back to the game, and it feels like it has been teased forever. Perhaps this endgame content could take this classic approach; however, one mode, a few quests, and a few extras doesn’t really stack up to the Designer’s Cut, assuming Director’s Cut is to be as big if not bigger than it.
Speculatively, that means that the new cosmetics of the Borderlands 3 Designer’s Cut are likely to find counterparts in the Director’s Cut, and perhaps, just maybe, Borderlands 3 could add something to go toe-to-toe with the new skill trees. Whether that’s a fifth skill tree (which would be getting out of hand) or some new way to play these, it seems almost like a requirement since this season pass is focused more on gameplay than story. Ultimately, it remains to be seen, but if the Designer’s Cut is any indication, Borderlands 3‘s Director’s Cut may just be bigger and better.
