Set in a dystopian wasteland where flesh-eating zombies roam freely and humans can be even more dangerous, The Walking Dead is every post-apocalyptic horror lover’s dream series. The most-watched cable show of the 2019 and 2020 season during its tenth season run, despite several ups and downs in viewership, The Walking Dead has managed to remain popular since its premiere.
Television isn’t enough for some fans that have that itch to fully immerse themselves in their favorite fictional world. Originally inspired by a graphic novel, the show also sparked several console games to further bring the show to life. If fans are looking for something completely separate from the television series, there are many options for enthusiasts of the popular AMC drama.
10 Deadlight: Director’s Cut (2016) – 70
A survival game by Tequila Works, Deadlight is a tribute to classic side-scrolling games popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The story follows Randall Wayne, a man in search of his family in the midst of the zombie apocalypse.
In the streets of Seattle, regular life no longer exists. Randall’s only hope is to make it to a Safe Zone and pray that his family might be waiting there. Deadlight features great visuals, varied gameplay, and an intense atmosphere.
9 Dead Island (2011) – 71
Another zombie-themed game, Dead Island is a role-playing survival adventure focused around an ensemble of playable characters. Stranded on Banoi, a small, tourism-driven island for high profile visitors, five people fight to survive an outbreak.
Playing as a rapper, a resort employee, a colonel, a football star, and a former police officer, players earn experience points and level up their characters through individual campaigns. Dead Island‘s melee-focused combat is enjoyable and the zombie mayhem can be quite thrilling.
8 Dying Light (2015) – 74
Dying Light is an open-world, first-person horror game by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Kyle Crane serves as the game’s main character. An undercover agent, his mission is to infiltrate an infected Quarantine Zone to find a missing political figure.
Players are tasked with side quests as Crane works his way through an onslaught of zombie attacks and desperate survivors. By the same developer responsible for Dead Island, Dying Light builds upon its predecessor’s ideas in impressive ways.
7 Call Of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles (2017) – 78
Call Of Duty was first set in World War II, but since then, it has branched out to include futuristic settings and even fantasy elements. Zombies Chronicles is a downloadable content pack that adds exclusive items and eight remastered zombie maps to the game.
This DLC is perfect for fans of Call of Duty that are eager to add a little zombie fun into the first-person shooter, although the package is a bit pricey.
6 Fallout: New Vegas (2010) – 84
Fallout: New Vegas appeals to fans of post-apocalyptic settings, minus the zombies. The game takes place in a futuristic Las Vegas after a nuclear war has ravaged the United States.
Much like The Walking Dead, there are new rules now that the world is in shambles, and not everybody agrees on how things should be run. The primary antagonist is a dictatorial leader named Caesar, who runs a group of slavers called Caesar’s Legion.
5 Left 4 Dead (2008) – 89
After a virus coined the “Green Flu” spreads through Pennsylvania, players must fight to survive. Left 4 Dead is a first-person shooter that takes place in a world of Infected.
Rather than shambling groaners, the “zombies” in this game resemble the rabid infected from 28 Days Later. Both single-player and multiplayer, one can choose one of four different characters that are immune to the virus. The sequel, Left 4 Dead 2, is also worth a try.
4 The Walking Dead: A Telltale Series (2012) – 89
The Walking Dead: A Telltale Series is an obvious pick, but not one to be overlooked. In this choice-based game, most of the decisions made by the player can change the story, relationships, and even whether a character lives or dies.
Revolving around a little girl named Clementine and an ex-convict who takes her under his wing, the two struggle to survive in the new world of the zombie apocalypse.
3 Resident Evil 2 (2019) – 91
First released in 1998, Capcom remade the popular survival horror game, with the modern version of Resident Evil 2 making its debut in 2019. Fully remastered and with a few changes to gameplay, the remake was popular with fans of the franchise.
Playing as either Claire Redfield or Leon Kennedy, players must escape Racoon City after the horrific outbreak of the T-virus from the original game that mutates people into aggressive monsters.
2 Borderlands 2 (2012) – 91
This dystopian first-person shooter brings a dash of science fiction to its apocalyptic setting. In Borderlands, colonists failed in their attempts to occupy a planet called Pandora. Realizing that this world is not their new home, they release the prisoners working as slave labor and abandon them.
Set 5 years after the first game, Borderlands 2 deals with the main antagonist, Handsome Jack, and his attempts to name himself Pandora’s dictator.
1 The Last Of Us (2013) – 95
Known for its outstanding storyline and character development, The Last Of Us is an easy choice for The Walking Dead fans. A jaded smuggler and a teenage girl trek across an apocalyptic United States run by martial law with hopes that the latter’s immunity may be the key to saving the world.
Fun gameplay, excellent graphics, and terrifying zombie-like Infected make this emotionally charged game truly one of the best on the market.
