10 Didn’t Know Was Coming: Balan Wonderworld

Yuji Naka is a video game developer who’s made an undeniable mark on the industry. His work with Sega led to influential titles like NiGHTS Into Dreams, Burning Rangers, and his most significant work, Sonic the Hedgehog. Balan Wonderworld marks Naka’s first collaboration with Square Enix and it looks to be another dazzling reinvention of the platformer genre. The game uses a wide array of costumes as the source of unique abilities to navigate levels and it looks like a beautiful experience. Balan Wonderworld is set to be released in March and it’s a PlayStation 5 that shouldn’t be overlooked.

9 Rumored: Oddworld: Soulstorm

The Oddworld series is such a thoroughly bizarre property that it’s impressive to see it still around decades after its debut. 2014’s Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! functions as a remake of the original PlayStation game in the series and the upcoming Oddworld: Soulstorm is following suit by reinventing the second entry in the series, Abe’s Exoddus. The platformer has Abe attempt to free a bunch of his species from their existence as slaves. Oddworld: Soulstorm has been in development for several years and while an exact release date hasn’t been set, it should still come out in 2021.

8 Didn’t Know Was Coming: The Nioh Collection

Team Ninja has built a reputation for putting out some of the most punishing action titles. Both Nioh and Nioh 2 feel like a mix between Ninja Gaiden and a Dark Souls game as it features grueling action where a determined Samurai makes his way through a war torn 1600s Japan.

The Nioh Collection puts together both exceptional games into one impressive package that will keep fans busy for a while. Its February of 2021 release is right around the corner, but there are other games that have been given the spotlight.

7 Rumored: Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

Superhero video games have never been more popular and Rocksteady’s upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League looks like a serious contender. Set within the same continuity as the Batman: Arkham series, the game centers around the Suicide Squad’s mission to defeat Braniac and his brainwashed version of the Justice League. Players work there way through an open world version of Metropolis and can control Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang. Kill the Justice League’s release date is actually been projected for 2022, but it’s still possible that it could sneak in by the end of 2021.

6 Didn’t Know Was Coming: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

The Ratchet & Clank series has been dormant for some time, which is what makes its glorious return on the PlayStation 5 so significant. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a canonical sequel that continues the series’ storyline from after the PlayStation 3’s Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. The platformer-shooter hybrid sends the titular characters across different realities and it looks like a strong return to form. Not exact release date has been set, but it’s currently planned to come out in the first half of 2021.

5 Rumored: The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum

There have been many different video games set within The Lord of the Rings universe that have all found varying degrees of success. Plenty of these titles reach diminishing returns as they cover the same territory, but The Lord of the Rings: Gollum looks exciting because of its considerably different approach.

Rather than control powerful warriors or magical creatures, players are instead put in Gollum’s shoes. It looks like a very creative take on The Lord of the Rings material as well as an action-adventure game that will lean on mechanics other than combat.

4 Didn’t Know Was Coming: Hitman 3

The Hitman series has become one of the most impressive and ambitious stealth franchises on the market and the games have seen a real boost in popularity over the last generation. Hitman 3 is the final installment in the series’ World of Assassination trilogy and it looks like it’s easily the biggest and most immersive experience yet. Hitman never holds back, but this game is said to take Agent 47 to his darkest places yet. Hitman 3 is supposed to come out in January of 2021, so it’s a good way to kick off 2021 for the console.

3 Rumored: Dragon Age 4

BioWare’s Dragon Age series has become a satisfying source of content for fans of open world fantasy RPGs. There have been a lot of spin-offs and deviations in the Dragon Age canon, but it’s finally time for Dragon Age 4 to come forward. Details have been minimal on the follow-up to Dragon Age: Inquisition other than a brief teaser trailer that was shown several years back. The title is still in development, but hopefully it’s still far enough along that PlayStation 5 owners won’t have to wait until 2022 to play it.

2 Didn’t Know Was Coming: Far Cry 6

Ubisoft’s Far Cry games have become some of the most satisfying entries from the company and its upcoming installment, Far Cry 6, looks to be a real achievement on a storytelling and cinematic level. The first-person shooter has the player control a guerrilla fighter who attempts to tackle a corrupt dictatorship on a fictional island that’s not unlike Cuba. Far Cry 6 was supposed to be released in February of 2021, but it’s since been delayed, but should still hopefully be able to come out before 2022.

1 Rumored: Destiny 2: Lightfall

Bungie’s Destiny 2 is one of most popular and addicting multiplayer shooters on the market, yet the series has taken a unique approach where it’s released years of expansion content in lieu of a proper Destiny 3. Destiny 2: Beyond Light just came out on the PlayStation 5, but there’s more content on the way that’s set to explore more corners of the Destiny universe. The Witch Queen is next in line and even though the following Lightfall is expected to come out in 2022, it’s still possible that their release schedule gets accelerated.
