Another one is clocking out for good. NBC‘s Superstore, which quickly charmed audiences with its Office Space-esque take on the retail world, will conclude as a series at the end of its current and now final season. No word on how Dina is taking it, though employees may wish to avoid the supervisor office until the floor stops shaking.
NBC has announced that its little big box store comedy will finally see the end of its story once season 6 finishes up. Having just completed showing its 2020 episodes, Superstore will air its final 11 in 2021, clocking in the whole series at a respectable 113 episodes. While no explicit reason was given for the show’s cancelation, it’s likely that NBC simply wants to make room for its more popular series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine as well as some fresh up-and-coming productions.
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, production leading up to season 6 was a bit turbulent, taking a break from filming season 5 in March which led to one fewer episode than had originally been planned. The dangling plot threads were eventually tied up in the first two episodes of season 6, which only just began filming in September. So the departure of America Ferrera’s character Amy (originally planned for the end of season 5) was pushed back two episodes, allowing the show to properly resolve her character arc.
Series creator Justin Spitzer is currently working on a new pilot for NBC, which may be another contributing factor towards the cancelation. Spitzer serves as an executive producer for Superstore along with Ferrera, so with the latter departing the show and the former tinkering with new projects, this would probably be a good time for any show to start eyeing exit strategies.
Superstore‘s relatable setting and genuinely funny writing drew in plenty of fans while the scattering of surprisingly poignant and topical moments kept audiences’ attention. It’s so easy to laugh at Garrett’s (Colton Dunn) often hilariously cynical store announcements that many were likely caught off guard during more dramatic points like Amy’s divorce or the immediate aftermath of the ICE raid on the store. Those heartfelt touches kept viewers engaged with the characters they were chuckling at only minutes earlier.
It will be interesting to see how the show ends. Having just started filming again in September, Superstore has incorporated the real world coronavirus pandemic into the series itself, so it seems there’s a bit of a downer ending in store unless the writers take a little creative liberty and maybe move the vaccine rollout up a few months. But however things go, Superstore will most certainly be remembered fondly in the hearts of its very tired fans.
Season 6 of Superstore will begin airing its final 11 episodes starting on January 14, 2021.
