Now that December is here, the holiday festivities are getting into full swing, and that means classic Christmas songs are playing on radios everywhere. A lot of people have been awaiting the annual deluge of holiday tunes with excitement, while others have been dreading the return of the same obnoxiously catchy tunes from years past. Whatever one’s feelings, though, most gamers will agree that a Legend of Zelda-themed Christmas album is a welcome addition to the holiday music catalog.
Since many fans’ connection to Zelda began with getting its games as presents, odds are a lot of people associate the holidays with the series to some degree, with memories of playing Link’s latest adventures becoming some of their fondest of the season. In fact, given how many iconic songs the Zelda series has produced, it’s almost surprising that it’s taken this long for fans to get around to using them as the basis for a holiday album.
Regardless, fans can now celebrate with the release of A Merry Hyrule Christmas. Produced by Eric Bucholz and video game music label Materia Collective, the tribute album combines different tracks from across the series’ history with some of the most classic Christmas carols, covering the spectrum of holiday genres from orchestral all the way to rock.
The result is as funny as it is catchy. There’s a solemn mashup of “O Holy Night” and Zelda’s Lullaby from Ocarina of Time, as well as pun-based song titles like Silent Knight and Din Rest Ye Merry Deku Scrubs. It can get pretty silly, but whether it’s a festively jazzy rendition of the Kakariko Village theme or a nostalgia-filled Zelda spin on “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” the whole thing is still cleverly crafted.
The full tracklist for a A Merry Hyrule Christmas, which is available now for all major streaming services and storefronts, includes:
- Kakariko Village
- O Sacred Light
- Clock Town Sleigh Ride
- Silent Knight
- Carol of the Goddess
- Dragon Roost Hymn
- Din Rest Ye Merry Deku Scrubs
- The Twelve Days of Christmas
With the 2020 holiday season set to wrap up a particularly stressful year for most people, A Merry Hyrule Christmas’ delightful arrangements are bound to bring a smile to fans’ faces and keep the Zelda spirits high while they wait for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and hope that 2021 will have substantial updates to offer them regarding the upcoming sequel.
Of course, fans do have a new Zelda game to get excited about this holiday. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launched recently and is most likely on a lot of fans’ wishlists right now. It’s a good thing then that Age of Calamity has already been discounted on Amazon, making it even easier for fans to continue adding Link’s adventures to their holiday memories.
