Anyone interested in buying the original version of Dragon Quest 11 digitally is out of luck now. In the wake of yesterday’s multiplatform launch of Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, it’s been discovered that the base game has been delisted from digital storefronts.
As spotted by ResetEra members and PushSquare, a quick search on the PlayStation Store and Steam now only brings up the Definitive Edition, with the 2018 original nowhere to be seen. The original listings can still be found via a Google search, but the PS Store listing merely states that Dragon Quest 11 is “not available for purchase.” The Steam listing, however, has a little more detail, stating that the game was removed at Square Enix’s request, which suggests that that’s the reason for the PS Store delisting as well.
On one hand, it makes sense that Square would remove the original version. Most agree that all of the changes to the base game make the Definitive Edition the best version of Dragon Quest 11, so it can be argued that the 2018 release is obsolete now. On the other, though, since the multiplatform version is basically an upscaled port of the initial Switch release of Dragon Quest 11 S, there are a few visual downgrades in places. That’s hardly a dealbreaker, but it might be enough to make some new players want to buy the original version instead.
As it stands now, the only way to do that is to find a physical copy of the game somewhere, and while that’s far from convenient, especially nowadays, at least it’s still an option for those interested in the original version of Dragon Quest 11.
