Fans of the Devil May Cry games are no strangers to tongue-in-cheek humor. This franchise has a unique balance of action, comedy, romance, and drama which immerses many gamers into the setting and also generates empathy for the characters. Sometimes, however, things can get ridiculous.
Fans have no qualms about perpetuating the funnier aspects of the game across the internet. Memes born from such a process have somehow not only stood the test of time, but have become relevant once more due to Devil May Cry 5‘s release and popularity. No dialogue, theme song, or animation is safe from the meme-generators of the world wide web. Hardcore devil-trigger-pullers love memes almost as much as slaying demons.
10 Feeling Motivated
In Devil May Cry 3, Vergil appears in his usual antagonistic manner, although this time he is not possessed by any exterior force… yet. Instead, he does battle with his twin brother, Dante, for the sake of proving his power and potentially acquiring more strength. During some of these brotherly bouts, Vergil will feel his pulse race enough to say that he is feeling motivated, even if Dante is currently beating him to a pulp. It can be hard to tell what a half-demon considers motivational. At times, Vergil will be so motivated that he will repeatedly say so over and over, which can become both obnoxious and comical.
9 It’s Getting Bigger
This series tends to have a lot of music integrated into the gameplay, many songs of which are incredibly catchy. In DMC5, some lyrics from the game’s popular battle theme “Devil Trigger” are “It’s getting bigger… pull my devil trigger”. When some of these lyrics get combined with certain shots of Nero’s face, the result can be both comical and a bit lewd. These are common themes among many DMC memes.
8 The Time Has Come
This is another musical meme. Devil May Cry 4 has a battle theme titled “The Time Has Come”, which is about what occurs when Dante, Nero, or Vergil show up to slay a bunch of demons. The first line of this song is “The time has come, and so have I”, which makes it clear that the player is ready to take out some Hellish foes, though it also has another meaning. A bawdy one that when combined with certain expressions Nero makes in DMC4 can result in amusing interpretations.
7 Nero’s Stylish Dance Moves
Style is a huge component in this franchise. Following a fortunately timed screenshot taken from Devil May Cry 5, Nero appears to be doing some sort of jig. This pose is part of the ending animation for when Nero is about to come to a halt after running but in this frame it can be interpreted as a dance move.
As a still image, it can be chuckle-worthy but this meme’s humor truly shines as an animated GIF that loops this pose and its mirror image.
6 World’s Best Dad
As the story unfolds in Devil May Cry 5, the player learns that Vergil is Nero’s father and that he was the one who tore off and stole Nero’s arm. There is very little information regarding Vergil’s other parenting feats but it can be assumed that he is less than an ideal father figure. As far as the player knows, ripping his son’s arm off is the first time Vergil makes contact with Nero. This meme juxtaposes a classic symbol of good parenthood with an awful one.
5 Crew Cut Took Notes
At the beginning of the game, the player watches a cutscene where Nero rescues a soldier from some hideous monsters. In the process, the demon slayer calls the soldier “crew cut”. As very few minor characters get dialogue in the DMC games, fans took note of this particular soldier who has a bit of banter with the demon hunter. Especially since Nero tells him to “take notes” while dispatching foes. Many found this hilarious enough to create mods where one can play as “Crew Cut” and do just as Nero suggested: getting good at slaying demons.
4 Dante Did Not Age Well
Compared to his appearance in earlier games, Dante has not seemed to age well. The aging demon slayer in fact looks a lot like some other older characters in gaming. For example, Dante bears a striking resemblance to lieutenant Hank Anderson from Detroit: Become Human.
The hair, beard, and wrinkles make them look a lot closer than one would expect considering how different the two characters are. Gamers can find this comparison frequently when matters of Dante’s age are being researched.
3 You Think You’ve Got Problems?
Dante is no stranger to severe injuries through the series. Thankfully, due to his devil blood, he can shake even the most serious wounds off as if they were mere scratches. There aren’t many who can give such a bored expression while being impaled by their own sword. Though, this expression can be interpreted as the hero being annoyed, which opens up the image to funny captions. If one ever contemplates the issues in their own life and see this meme, they might well forget their troubles for a number of reasons.
2 Catching Up On Reading
During DMC5, V shows up to give Nero a hand and explains that he is a bit late due to performing some research. Comically, someone has inserted a book into V’s hands which validates Nero’s bemused expression. Even though V has a great deal of power, it is not of the physical variety. This meme points out his bookish nature and implies he considers light reading to be more important than Nero’s well being.
1 Dante’s Voice Crack
In the first Devil May Cry, there is a cutscene near the end of the game where Dante laments over the apparent loss of Trish’s life. In woe, the demon slayer says, “I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!” Though, when he says “light” his voice cracks very noticeably. On top of that, the echo that follows carries the voice crack for further hilarity. For some reason, those in charge of producing the game decided to keep this take for the final version. Fans of the series have been referencing this occurrence since Devil May Cry‘s release in 2001.
