Here’s Why EB Games is Trending on Twitter | Game Rant

Every now and then, a seemingly random phrase will start trending on Twitter. Recently the phrase PS5 Pro was trending on Twitter, and before that it was “Not a PS5.” The most recent example of this is EB Games, a company that many may feel they know nothing about but are likely fairly familiar with.

For those that don’t know, EB Games was once a branch of GameStop, as GameStop acquired the company in 2004. Since then, most EB Games stores have been phased out in favor of GameStop’s branding, but there are still some storefronts going by the old name. The reason the term is trending on Twitter has to do with a particular viral tweet.

Most gamers, and even many non-gamers, are familiar GameStop as one of the main places to buy, sell, and trade physical copies of games. With the rise of digital gaming, it’s been having some difficulties, but a recent GameStop Announces Multi-Year Partnership with Microsoft (gamerant.com), things seem to be looking up for the video game retail giant.

The trend seems to have started with this tweet, where user @johnnycharles88 asks people to date themselves with a store. It wasn’t long before someone brought up EB Games, and then things started to spiral out of control from there. As a result, many people have begun digging into GameStop’s history and finding some interesting things. None of this is really anything new, rather they are facts that have always been publicly available that many weren’t aware of.

For example, before GameStop was GameStop, and before it was EB Games, it was at one point in time called FuncoLand, and fans seem to be loving this sort of information up. Others counter by naming similarly old or outdated store names like Blockbuster or even Toys R Us, but the EB Games trend seems to be the most popular. The whole situation is rather humorous, especially when considering that EB Games is so prevalent in Canada, going so far as to call itself the largest video game retailer in Canada.

Naturally, this sort of unexpected fame is viewed as an opportunity for the one who stumbles upon it. Rather than promoting something of his own, though, @johnnycharles88 wants people to check out his girlfriend’s natural skin care and hair product line. Interested readers can find the link to that in the comments of his tweet above.
