With technology and pop culture progressing at a rapid pace, traditional methods of popping the question have become outdated, with new ideas like an Overwatch loot box proposal being thought of. This is very much the case for Casandra Vuong and Chary Keijzer, whose shared occupation requires them to be on the cutting edge of innovation. The two run the YouTube channel Cas and Chary VR, where they regularly upload VR-related content including hardware and game reviews.
The couple have been together for over 6 years, and have maintained their YouTube channel since 2016, with fans wondering who would propose and when. That time came and in the most fitting way possible for the pair and their channel.
Cas took several courses in making Oculus Quest games, proceeding to handcraft several assets based off memories her and Chary have shared over the years, including a Valentine’s Day trip to Rome and another to Taipei. While Chary had the headset on, obscuring her vision, and headphones preventing her from hearing anything else besides the game, Cas went around the room dimming the lights, placing balloons and roses around the area, and getting into position. Though Chary came into the game thinking it was a random creation, she eventually realized it was tailored for her.
After the game, Chary took off the VR gear to see Cas in front of her kneeling with an engagement ring and the question of the evening. Of course, Chary said “yes.” The couple announced their engagement last week on social media, but a behind-the-scenes video detailing the setup only came in this week. No ceremony date has been announced yet.
With the continued growth of online platforms and industries and not being able to do public efforts due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it seems only a matter of time before proposals like this become relatively commonplace. In terms of other gaming-related marriage proposals, several Redditors have proposed using the PS5. These efforts have also been successful, both in terms of getting “yes” as an answer and in getting upvotes on the platform.
As for VR, headset usage has increased this year, with the number of active users expected to grow to 45 million by 2025. The platform received its marquee title this year in Half-Life: Alyx, with Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell championing the format. In a recent interview, Newell cited the potential for increased visual fidelity as a potential game-changer in the larger video game industry.
