Although the likes of Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day went down as classics following their debut on the N64, several of the platform’s more obscure franchises have been less successful. However, one N64 platformer that has since discovered something of a cult-following is Glover, with the 1998 game being looked back on by many as a beloved childhood classic.
Back in 2017, Piko Interactive bought the rights to the Glover franchise, teasing in 2018 that it was looking to port the original game to Steam and potentially work on its canceled sequel. The developer remained silent on Glover until last week, when it tweeted out an image of the original N64 cover for the game with the caption “What Stretch Goals would you like to see on a Glover Kickstarter?”
It seems the studio is gearing up to resurrect the franchise through a crowd-funding campaign, with the hope to see Glover return to the limelight with a new title. Suggestions for Kickstarter stretch goals have included plush toys of Glover’s titular character, a physical copy of the game replicating its N64 box art, and a digital soundtrack, alongside several other fun goodies based on the character. With Piko Interactive originally teasing that it was interested in finishing the abandoned sequel to the game that entered development back in 1999, it will be intriguing to see whether the studio’s Kickstarter focuses on resurrecting that project, with Glover 2 allegedly being pretty far into development before it was canned.
For those unaware of the N64 platformer, Glover saw players assume the role of a magical four-fingered glove as he attempted to save his kingdom from being destroyed by his evil counterpart Cross-Stich. To thwart his plans, players had to navigate across environments and collect crystals that would help restore Glover’s home, all the while avoiding enemies and climbing across precarious environments. It generally received positive reviews by many and is often regarded as something of an obscure gem.
Seeing as industry trends are currently very embracing towards older franchises making big returns – with Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, and Destroy all Humans all capitalizing on that newfound interest – now is as good a time as ever for Glover to make its comeback. That being said, nothing has currently been confirmed, so it’s worth keeping an eye on Piko Interactive’s Twitter page in the coming weeks to see what comes of this suggested crowdfunding campaign. Hopefully, it means that fans of Glover’s short stint in the platforming scenes during the late 90s are set to get a new adventure in its whimsical universe.
