Two years ago, DC confirmed Warner Bros. was developing a Plastic Man film based on the eponymous comic book character created by Jack Cole. Now, the studio is moving the project in a new direction, with Black List writer Cat Vasko being hired to pen the latest screenplay.
When the Plastic Man film first got underway, the project was described as a “comedic action-adventure” that would remain true to the light-hearted tone of the source material. While a director had not yet been chosen, Breaking News in Yuba County writer Amanda Idoko had been brought on to pen the script.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has learned Vasko has now been hired to reimagine the Plastic Man film as a vehicle for a female lead. With the project in the earliest stages of development, it remains unclear if the new take on the material means the film will undergo a title change or not. The project will be overseen by DC President Walter Hamada and Chantal Nong. In addition to making the 2014 Black List for her unproduced Situation Comedy screenplay, Vasko recently set up an untitled fairy tale project starring Olivia Cooke and LaKeith Stanfield at Disney+.
Cole’s incarnation of Plastic Man, who debuted in the pages of Quality Comics’ Police Comics #1 in 1941, started out as a crook named Patrick “Eel” O’Brian. After being shot and exposed to an unknown chemical during a botched heist, O’Brian was left for dead by his fellow gang members and awoke to discover he’d been endowed with the ability to stretch his body into various forms, a fate that prompted the thief to reform his life. DC Comics acquired Plastic Man and a host of other characters from Quality Comics after the latter company went under in 1956.
Warner Bros. has been attempting to bring Plastic Man to the silver screen since the early ’90s. The Wachowski’s had completed a screenplay by 1995 that ultimately ended up being shelved, though Keanu Reeves had reportedly been attached at one point before the project was once again put on the back burner.
While a star has not been attached to this reworked version of Plastic Man, the decision to focus on a female lead likely takes Ben Schwartz off the casting table. The comedian, famous for roles in Parks and Recreation and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog, had expressed his interest in the role on his official Twitter account.
